VAIL, Colo. – After one round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic, the NM State women's golf team finds itself in a tie for 14th place. With plenty of time remaining to make moves, the Aggies will look to gain valuable experience in the young season.
Alison Gastelum led NM State in the opening round, shooting a 71 (-1) and ending the day in a tie for 12th. Gastelum rounded out her opening 18 with a pair of birdies on holes 17 and 18 to work her way back under par.
Valentina Origel and
Emma Bunch matched one another for the hottest stretch of the round. Both Aggies recorded a trio of birdies in a four-hole stretch. Bunch used birdies on holes 10 and 12 to propel a 34 (-2) on the back nine. On the contrary, Origel finished her front nine with birdies on holes six, eight, and nine to also shoot at 34 (-2).
Round One Notes
- As a team, NM State carded 23 birdies in the opening round, leading all teams in the field.
- Alison Gastelum was lights out on Par 3's throughout the day, averaging just 2.25 strokes.
- NM State averaged 2.65 strokes on Par 3 holes in the opening round – The lowest of any team in the Golfweek Red Sky Classic.
- Arantza Armas Stenner played her first round of the season for NM State.
- The Aggies will tee off at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday for the second round.
