Garvin and Bunch Shine as Aggies Finish Second

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Records are meant to be broken and that is exactly what happened on Wednesday during the Golf Iconic Classic. As a team, NM State women's golf managed to break the previous tournament record of 859 when they fired a team 855 (-9) over three rounds. Unfortunately for the Aggies, Long Beach State shattered the previous mark by firing a 841 (-23) to work their way into the NCAA record books.
 
Angela Garvin posted a stellar final round to cap off her first top 5 finish as an Aggie. Garvin led all Conference USA players throughout the three-day event, tying for third place. In the final round, Garvin posted a 69 (-3) to climb into third after beginning Wednesday in ninth place.
 
Emma Bunch finished right behind Garvin in fifth place. Over 54 holes, Bunch shot a 211 (-5), including a one-under 71 on Wednesday.
 
Rounding out the NM State scoring efforts were Alison Gastelum and Valentina Origel. Both natives of Mexico, Gastelum and Origel tied for 24th in the Golf Iconic Classic. In the final round, both Gastelum and Origel once again matched each other on the course, each carding a 74 (+2).
 
Among the individuals playing for the Aggies, Kaylee Chen posted the best finish, tying for 42nd. Chen also carded the lowest final round score among the individuals, firing a 74 (+2). The Denver, Colo. native finished the Aggies' home tournament with a 222.
 
After a short hiatus, the Aggies will travel to Hawai'i to compete in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
 
 
Final Round Notes
  • NM State's 855 broke the previous Golf Iconic Classic team record of 259.
  • Angela Garvin posted the best finish for NM State, tying for third.
  • Emma Bunch finished right behind Garvin in fifth place.
  • Alison Gastelum and Valentina Origel also recorded top 25 finishes after tying for 24th.
  • Long Beach State won the team championship, shooting 841 (-23)
  • Nevada's Leah John took home the individual championship, firing a 203 (-13)
  • The Aggies finished in second for both Par 4 (4.05) and Par 5 (4.63) scoring
  • NM State finished second among the field with 48 birdies on their home course.
  • Bunch and Kaylee Chen was tied for the lead in the field with 43 pars apiece.
