UIW to Host NM State's Roadtrip Finale on Sunday

| By:

Aggies (0-2) will look to bounce back after narrow defeat against UTSA.

SAN ANTONIO - In their second and final game in Alamo City, NM State has their eyes on Incarnate Word. The Cardinals stand at 1-0 in 2023-24, after taking care of Our Lady of the Lake (NAIA) earlier in the week. OLLU did not win a single quarter, and were held to just 31.8% from the field in the loss. UIW comfortably won 68-40 on the back of 12 points from Chloe Storer on perfect efficiency.

Scouting the Cardinals

Incarnate Word is led by Jeff Dow in his fifth season in San Antonio. Since taking the reins, Dow has led the Cardinals to a 39-55 record. Dow boasts a career record of 314-264, most recently highlighted by five seasons at ULM prior to coming to UIW.

In their win over OLLU, the Cardinals missed all six of their three-point attempts in the first quarter. From that point on, they went 7-for-27 for a more respectable 25.9%. UIW held the Saints to just four made three pointers on 17 tries.

The Cardinals dominated down low as well. UIW put up 30 points in the paint, aided by 16 second-chance points. OLLU only managed 16 paint points and just seven second-chance points across four quarters.

UIW's most dominant stretch came in the second period, outscoring the Saints 23-5. The Cardinals shot 64.3% from the field in the quarter, and outscored OLLU 14-0 in points off their nine turnovers in the 10-minute period.

Jorja Elliott put together a solid all-around performance against OLLU. The sophomore guard went 3-for-6 from the field and hit two of her five threes to amass an efficient eight points. Elliott also led the team with seven rebounds, only adding one foul in 22 minutes of action.

What to Watch For

  • Tylie Jones will be looking to build on her career-best performance on Friday. The junior transfer put together a 17-point outing in which she made four of her five attempts from behind the three-point line.

  • Sabou Gueye has already surpassed double digits in steals across her first two games. The junior is one of 31 players in the country currently averaging at least 5.0 steals per game.

  • The Aggies only posted one assist in the second half of their loss to UTSA. The team is sure to look to move the ball around more, closer to their eight-assist performance in the first half.

  • NM State has yet to win, despite only being outscored in two quarters this season. They tied their opponents in two of the eight quarters, and won four quarters. The first quarter vs. Arizona, and the third at UTSA have been too costly to overcome and win.

  • After going 5-for-12 from behind the arc in the first half, the Aggies only sank one of their five attempts in the final 20 minutes. Tylie Jones was the only player to make a three-pointer after the opening quarter.
