In Overtime Battle with Louisville, NM State falls 84-90
Jordan Rawls led with 20 points;
Kaosi Ezeagu had his season high in points with 17.
Louisville, Ky. - Louisville (3-3, 0-0 ACC) welcomed the NM State Aggies (2-5, 0-0 CUSA) in front of 10,527 at the KFC Yum Center Sunday afternoon. Despite leading the cardinals for majority of the game, with 0:21 seconds left in regulation Tre White made a go ahead three to tie the game. Kasi Ezeagu had an opportunity to close the game out with 2 free throw attempts with 1.5 seconds and failed to make either shot. This lead to Louisville taking control in overtime to get the win 84-91.
"Man, we just had a few too many turnovers today and didn't finish," Said Coach
Jason Hooten after the game. "We got to learn how to finish."
The Aggies had five double digit scores this evening for the most this season. The front runners were
Jordan Rawls with 20 points and
Kaosi Ezeagu with 17 points. Cardinals guard Skyy Clark led all scorers with 29 points with 15 coming from the free throw line. Louisville also had Tre White and JJ Traynor finish with 20+ points on the evening. The Aggies dealt with a huge foul disparity, finishing with 40 fouls on the night compared to Louisville's 16.
First half
- The Aggies came out with a Robert Carpenter layup off a turnover to get on the board first. They eventually used that as momentum for a 9-3 run out the gate. The Cards got off to a slow start offensively, only scoring by FT's made by guard Tre White within the first 7 minutes.
- With 8:11 the Aggies pushed the score to 22-12 after a Christian Cook floater right before media timeout. The Aggies got into foul trouble early (8-1) which gave the Cardinals a way to stay within arm's reach.
- After getting up by seven following a Kaosi Ezeagu right-handed post move, Louisville went on a 5-0 run to end the first half and close the gap to only two points.
Second half
- The Cardinals came out and collapsed the lead to only one point with 13:32 left in the half before the Aggies went on an 12-4 run to make the score 53-44 with 9:58 left.
- With 6:34 left in the half Christian Cook hit a big momentum jumper to put the Aggies back up five points to keep a handle on the lead.
- After letting the Aggies get up 73-65 with 1:18 left in the game, the Cardinals wasted no time and went on an 8-0 run that ended with a Tre White three pointer to tie it up. Kaosi Ezeagu had an opportunity to win the game with free throw attempts with 1.5 seconds left in the game.
OT
- To open overtime Louisville got on the board first with a JJ Traynor layup followed by a Tre white free throw to go up 76-73. The Aggies answered back with a layup from Kaosi Ezeagu to make the score 76-75 with 4:25 left. Jordan Rawls then got to the charity stripe and made one to tie the game up at 76-76.
- The Aggies tried their best to fight back but foul trouble plagued the team as they gave the Cardinals 19 free throw attempts in Overtime alone. Also, these fouls lead to six different Aggies fouling out the game and leave the team with four players on the court in the last seconds of the game.
Numbers of Note
- Jordan Rawls' game-high 20 points is the third most by an Aggie in a single game this season. Rawls also posted a career-high nine made field goals.
- Kaosi Ezeagu posted a career-high 17 points on 8-9 from the field. The 89% success rate is also the best by an Aggie this season. Ezeagu also finished with eight rebounds – a mark that is one shy of his career high.
- Jaden Harris recorded a career-best five assists.
- Six different Aggies reached the foul limit on Sunday – forcing Coach Hooten's squad to play the final seconds of the game with just four players on the court.
- Louisville's Skyy Clark finished with a game-high 29 points to mark the most points by an individual on the opposing team this season. Meanwhile, Tre White's 22 points is tied for the second most by an opposing scorer.
- The Aggies' 84 points is tied for the most points in a game this season – matching the total against Sul Ross on Nov. 8. This also came with a season-best mark of 58.3% (35-60) shooting from the field.
- The Louisville shooters knocked down just four three-pointers – the fewest by an opposing team this season
