NM State Concludes Day Two of Don Kirby Elite Invitational and Wraps Regular Season

Thobile Amon earns top mark in NM State history in the 800m run

ALBUQERQUE, N.M. – The NM State Track & Field team closed out their time at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Saturday, as well as finishing out the regular season. Thobile Amon recorded a top-five performance into an all-time NM State record, while Jhana Downie claimed the third best time in Aggie history with a sixth-place performance in the 400m. Along with them, numerous other student-athletes turned in career-best performances.

They say good things come in pairs, and Thulisile and Thobile Amon have proven just that through their performances at NM State. The sisters came in and made an instant impact on the Aggie's squad last season, and this year has been more of the same. In the 800m run, both recorded top-ten finishes. Thulisile crossed the line in seventh with a time of 2:12.13, while Thobile took fourth with a time of 2:10.85. This marked a personal best for the junior from Middleburg, South Africa, while also giving her the top spot all-time in NM State history. She takes the top spot from her sister, who posted a time of 2:11.64 in the 2022 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Jhana Downie took the top spot for her heat in the 400m dash, posting a time of 53.86. This time marked a personal best and places her third in NM State history for the event.

Rebecca Green took fifth in her flight and 19th overall in the shotput, recording a distance of 14.29 (46-10.75").

Sierra Brewer took part in the 60m dash prelims, setting a new personal best in the event with a time of 7.56.

Both Aggies who partook in the mile run, Kayla O'Connell and freshman newcomer Jordan Torres, turned in personal bests in the event. O'Connell recorded a time of 5:19.28, while Torres posted a mark of 5:39.97.
