NM State Sets Off to Albuquerque for New Mexico Collegiate Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M.
– The Aggies are attending their third straight meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center this Friday, returning from last week's UNM Team Open. Hosted by the University of New Mexico, both the Aggie Track & Field teams will get the opportunity to hone their skills in preparation for the 2023 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships held in Spokane, Washington on Friday Feb. 24th and Saturday, Feb. 25th.  
Aggie Excellence
  • Phethisang Makhethe and Aliyah Logan are both currently qualified for the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships after strong performances in the Weight Throw and 60m hurdles respectively.
  • Makhethe's mark of 20.06m at the MLK Collegiate Invitational places her 28th in the country.
  • Logan's time of 8.29 at the Corky Classic is currently 36th in the nation.
  • To qualify for the NCAA Championships, student-athletes must rank in the top-48 nationally for their respective events.
 
The Starting Line 
  • The New Mexico Collegiate Classic is the third indoor track meet out of four to be held in Albuquerque.

  • 29 athletes are scheduled to participate in 13 events over the two-day event.
  • NM State weight throwers snatched three spots in the top ten at the MLK Collegiate Invite; lead by Phethisang Makhethe in second and Miranda Tcheutchuoa in third. 
  • Aileen Alvarado will be the only high jumper competing in the UNM Open 
 
Back Track | UNM Team Open | 1.27-28.23 
  • Phethisang Makhethe took the silver in the weight throw with an official mark of 19.63m (64' 5.0"). 
  • Miranda Tcheutchuoa placed right behind Makhethe in the weight throw with a third-place mark of 17.88m (58' 8.0"). 
  • Rebecca Green took the bronze in shotput after a 14.31m (46' 11.5") throw; placing her third overall. 
  • Alesha Lane, the Freshman thrower out of Casper, Wyoming took the eighth overall spot in the event after a toss of 13.23m (43' 5.0") giving the Aggies their fifth top ten finish of the weekend.
