Aggies Net Second Place Finish at WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

Three Aggies take home the gold on day two giving NM State four first place finishes on the weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. – New Mexico State Indoor Track & Field concluded its indoor season Saturday night with a second-place finish at the WAC Indoor Championships after securing nine podium finishes, including four first place finishes.
 
Stephen F. Austin took home the trophy on the women's side with 99.5 total points. NM State and Sam Houston both produced 83 points, tying for second in the meet.
 
Phethisang Makhethe kicked off day two by defending her crown and breaking her own school record in the weight throw with an official mark of 20.61m.
 
Valissa Brown had herself a nice weekend after securing podium finishes in the long jump (5.93m) and 60m hurdles (8.48) placing first and fourth in the events. She also set a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 12.08m.
 
After breaking her personal best in the 200m prelim last night, Jhana Downie was able to take the gold medal in the 200m dash with another personal best time of 23.56. She also took home the gold in the 400m dash with an event best 53.19 second finish, breaking another personal record in the process.
 
Thulisile Amon and Thobile Amon were the only two Aggies to complete in the 800m dash with the pair of twins both finishing in the top ten of the race. Thulisile Amon took the second overall spot in the event with a time of 2:11.90, Thobile Amon finished sixth in the race with a time of 2:15.34. Thobile also competed in the mile run and legged out a new personal record with the fourth fastest time, crossing the finish line at 4:58.18.
 
Jhana Downie also had herself quite the weekend in Spokane. The Junior sprinter secured two gold medal finishes, taking first in the 200m dash with a 23.65 second finish and the 400m dash with a 53.19 finish.
 
Also, in the 200m dash was Grace Pendarvis who finished with a fourth-place time of 24:20.
