Naomi Slee Earns WAC Freshman of the Year Honors

Slee rounds out big week at the WAC Championships with individual honor.

ARLINGTON, Texas – NM State freshman standout Naomi Slee can officially add WAC Freshman of the Year to her lengthy list of accomplishments during her debut season as an Aggie.

Slee is coming immediately off a week at the WAC Championships where she was able to find the podium five times across the four-day meet, including three individual top-three finishes. The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, native earned silver in both the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle in addition to claiming bronze in the 200 free.

She also served as a key cog on the 400 free relay team who took second and on the 800 free relay team who earned a third-place finish to tally the Aggies' first podium finish of the 2023 WAC Championships.

While in Pharr, Texas, for the final meet of the season, Slee also etched her name into the NM State record books as she set three individual program records while also helping the 800 free relay post a school record.

At the WAC Championships, Slee took ownership of the Aggies' fastest times in the 500 free (4:47.72), the 1000 free (10:07.05) and the 1650 free (16:45.05).

Slee quickly became one of the Aggies' most dominant swimmers this season as she claimed 11 individual first-place finishes across nine meets this year. She also helped the Aggies' 400 free relay team to a first-place finish against North Texas and a top finish in the team's triangular versus Grand Canyon and Idaho.

With the recognition, Naomi Slee becomes just the fifth Aggie to claim WAC Freshman of the Year honors – joining Tricia Kiss, Lauren Wood, Maria Spies and Aliena Schmitdke.
