RESULTS

CANYON, Texas – Winning isn't easy, but it sure is fun. And the NM State Track & Field team had a lot of fun on Saturday in Canyon, Texas at the West Texas Spring Break Open, hosted by West Texas A&M University. In total, the Aggies earned top-finishes in four events (shot put, javelin, hammer throw and the200m dash), while recording 20 top-five finishes in numerous events.
 
In a stunning display of dominance, NM State captured the top five spots in the 200m dash and seven of the top 11. Jhana Downie led the way with a time of 23.77, while an unattached Lanie Whelpley finished in second with a time of 24.37. Sierra Brewer (24.71), Aliyah Logan (24.86) and T'Erica Boyd (24.89) rounded out the top-five. Freshman Jody Blackwood (25.15) posted the best finish in her career with a seventh-place result, while also turning in a new personal best. Breanna Moss (25.83) crossed the line 11^th to complete the swarm of Aggies at the top of the leaderboard.
 
Emily Birch eclipsed the field in the hammer throw, setting a personal best with a mark of 60.08m – while also tallying the first top-finish in her career. Makiya Moore took second in the event, posting a distance of 52.49m; her best mark in the hammer throw since the 2022 Don Kirby Tailwind Open. Kaelyn Fenstermacher competed in the event for just the third time in her time at NM State – posting a personal best in both distance (44.52m) and placement (5^th).
 
Rebecca Green captured a gold medal finish in the shotput with a mark of 14.12m – her first top finish of 2023 and third career top-placement in the event. Alesha Lane recorded her first top-five finish at NM State, posting a final distance of 13.05m to take third-place.
 
Mariah Humphrey tallied a top-finish in the javelin toss, posting a mark of 39.56m; her fifth career first-place result. Bailey Beene captured her fifth runner-up finish in the event, recording a distance of 37.91m.
 
Makiya Moore has served as an anchor on the NM State field team for years, providing consistent results and repeated success; today proved to be no different. A mark of 48.74 earned Moore a second-place finish – her twentieth as a member of the Crimson & White. Alesha Lane picked up her second career top-five finish, taking fifth in the event with a mark of 42.79m. Competing in the discus for just the second time as an Aggie, Bailey Beene set a new personal best (35.03m).
 
Terice Steen crossed the line in third at the 400m dash, posting a time of 56.70 – her best result in any event (indoor or outdoor) since the 2022 WAC Outdoor T&F Championships. Jody Blackwood competed in the 400m dash for the first time, finishing with a time of 1:00.65.
 
After competing in the 60m hurdles and 400m hurdles in the previously, Breanna Moss set her sight on the 100m hurdles Saturday – finishing fourth with a time of 14.66. This became the fifth time Moss posted a top-five finish at NM State.
 
Cameron Hodges set a new personal best in the long jump, tallying a mark of 5.66m while also recording her best career finish in any event at NM State (3^rd place). Victoria Veserra set a new personal record in the event, posting a distance of 5.46m – her fifth top-five finish in any event.
 
Leah Clark (5:08.08) and Angela Korte (5:08.96) set new bests in the 1500m run. Aileen Alvarado recorded the best finish of her young NM State career in the high jump, taking third with a tally of 1.48m.
 
UP NEXT
The Aggies will head to Tucson, Arizona for the Willie Williams Classic starting Friday, March 24^th and concluding Saturday, March 25^th. This will be the first of two meets this season that NM State will travel to Tucson – the team will compete in the Desert Heat Classic prior to the 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 11^th-13^th in Nacogdoches, Texas.
