Aggies Ascend Record Book in Multiple Meets

Terice Steen breaks school record in 400m hurdles, 4x400 team takes top spot in NM State history

Austin, Texas – The NM State track & field team participated in a bevy of meets over the weekend, heading to the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational in the Lone Star state, while also partaking in the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic in the Golden State. Terice Steen lapped her own school record in the 400m hurdles for the second weekend in a row, posting a time of 59.07, while also helping the 4x400 team – along with T'Erica Boyd, Jhana Downie and Jahnya Hill – to set the all-time NM State record with a time of 3:39.39. Multitudes of other Aggies recorded impressive finishes, while adding in a healthy smattering of new personal bests.

THURSDAY

Terice Steen is no stranger to the number one spot in the NM State record book, having her named etched there in the 400m hurdles since the 2021 season. But Steen has continued to improve in her junior season, besting that time for the last two weekends in a row. At the Texas Relays, she crossed the line with a time of 59.07 – taking sixth place in her competitive heat.

FRIDAY

Speed has been the theme of the weekend for NM State, as the 4x400 relay team of Terice Steen, T'Erica Boyd, Jhana Downie and Jahnya Hill posted a blazing time of 3:39.39 at the Texas Relays, supplanting the current school record with their time of 3:39.39.

T'Erica Boyd took to the track on a windy day at the Bobcat Invitational, racing to a new personal best in the 100m hurdles with a wind-assisted time of 13.91 (3.9 m/s) while finishing in seventh place.

Breanna Moss nabbed a sixth-place finish in the 400m hurdles at the Bobcat Invitational with a time of 1:01.79, a new personal best in the event. Israel Swanson recorded a season-high time of 1:03.91 to take 15th place.

Maggie Gibbs recorded a personal best in the 5000m at the Stanford Invitational, posting a time of 16:29.86 to finish in ninth place. Kayla O'Connell did the same over at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, shattering her previous personal best by over a minute to finish with a time of 17:40.41.

A multitude of Aggies from the men's side of the cross-country team made an appearance at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, partaking in the 5000m run. Collins Yego crushed his previous best in the event, finishing sixth in his heat and 30th overall in a field of more than 185 studeny-athletes with a time of 14:38.15. Freshman Adam Biwott ran in the event for the first time, recording a time of 14:53.88 en route to a 57th place finish. Micah Too joined in on the fun, improving on his previous best time with a tally of 15:14.90 to nab 81st. Nick Ortiz became the fourth member of NM State to record a new personal record in the event, racing his way to a time of 15:44.43.

SATURDAY

Aliyah Logan continued to prove she's one of the best hurdlers in the nation, taking third in the 100m hurdles at the Bobcat Invitational with a time of 13.63. Valissa Brown followed shortly after, coming in fifth place with a time of 13.77 – her second week in a row with a top five finish in the event.

Sierra Brewer took the track in the 100m dash at the Bobcat Invitational and came away with a seventh-place finish after crossing the line with a time of 11.89, a personal best and her first time competing in the event since the 2022 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The 4x100 team of Sierra Brewer, Jhana Downie, Aliyah Logan and Terice Steen recorded a third-place finish in San Marcos, tallying a time of 45.66.

Thulisile Amon tallied a fifth-place finish in section 4 of the 800m run at the Stanford Inviational, crossing the line with a time of 2:09.28.

Emily Birch paced the Aggies in the hammer throw, taking 12th place with a distance of 59.06 (193-9"), while Miranda Tcheutchoua notched an improvement in the event, recording a mark of 57.59 (188-11"). Kaelyn Fenstermacher became the third member of the Crimson & White to improve in the event, surpassing her previous best by over three meters to record a distance of 47.61 (153-2").

The quartet of Nick Allred, Nick Ortiz, Collins Yego and Anekin Hetman combined to record a time of 10:29.48, finishing sixth in the men's distance medley at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
