Aggies Venture West to California for Second Multi-Meet of the Season

NM State splits time between Bryan Clay Invitational, Beach Invitational, Mt. SAC relays and Pacific Coast Intercollegiate

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. – After a week light on competition, the Aggies now head west to the City of Angeles for a bevy of meets – the Beach Invitational and Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (hosted by Long Beach), the Bryan Clay Invitational (hosted by Azusa Pacific) and the Mt. SAC relays. NM State competed in this same meet last season, and represents the final multi-meet on the Aggies' schedule. Only two meets remain prior to the 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 11-13th in Nacogdoches, Texas.

The Starting Line

  • NM State heads to Los Angeles for the multitude of meets for the second season in a row – and their first visit to California during 2023.
  • This marks the second weekend this season the Aggies entered multiple meets on the same weekend - two weeks ago NM State participated in the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, Stanford Invitational, Bobcat Invitational and Texas Relays.

Back Track

  • Last week represented a light load for the Aggie track & field team – the only group to compete was the hammer throwers, participating in the UNM Spring Invite, taking place at Kidd Field on the campus of UTEP.
  • NM State swept the podium at the event, with Emily Birch (59.09m; 193-10") taking the top-spot, Miranda Tcheutchoua (55.85m; 183-03") finishing in second and Makiya Moore (52.94m; 173-08") capturing the bronze medal.



'Round the Region

  • During the outdoor track & field season, the top-48 student-athletes in their respective regions get invited to the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, California (May 24-27th), a precursor to the NCAA Championships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field in Austin, Texas (June 7-10th).
  • At the halfway point of the season, multiple Aggies are currently in position to qualify.

  • Maikya Moore took first place in her flight and finished tenth in a field of 55 with a toss of 50.87m, recording a new personal best in the process
  • Phetisang Makhethe captured fourth in her flight and fourth overall, setting a new personal best and crushing the all-time school record with a toss of 63.05m. Emily Hernandez took second place in her flight and tenth overall with a toss of 56.77m.
  • Mariah Humphrey took fourteenth overall with a throw of 39.40m.
  • Thulisile Amon finished first in her heat and took tenth overall among college athletes at the Bryan Clay Invitational, setting a new personal best with a time of 2:05.42.
  • Terice Steen took second in her heat and fifteenth overall in a field of 39 at the Mt. SAC relays with a time of 59.65
  • Richelle Sandin took fifth place with a time of 11:19.58, eclipsing her previous best by about 45 seconds.
  • Valissa Brown took third in her heat with a wind-assisted time of 13.76 (+2.8 m/s) and Aliyah Logan took second in hers with a time of 13.85 (+1.9 m/s) to pace the Aggies among a field of 82, taking 13th and 15th respectively.
  • The team consisting of Jhana DownieThulisile AmonSheyenne DrakeBreanna Moss grabbed fourth place, finishing with a time of 3:45.90.
