RESULTS
LAS CRUCES, NM. – After a whirlwind weekend that featured four different meets in the Los Angeles area, NM State returns to the Land of Enchantment for the Don Kirby Tailwind Open, hosted by the University of New Mexico. This marks the Aggies first trek to the Duke City of the 2023 outdoor season (the team participated in the UNM Spring Invite but competed at Kidd Field at UTEP).
The Starting Line
- The Aggies are set to compete in the Don Kirby Tailwind Open for the second consecutive year – and their first official visit to Albuquerque of the 2023 outdoor season.
- Following the conclusion of the Don Kirby Tailwind Open, NM State will compete in one last meet – the Desert Heat Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona – before the 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Nacogdoches, Texas on May 11th-May 13th.
Back Track
- A busy weekend for the Aggies provided fruitful results, with high placements and numerous personal bests being broken while also allowing the team to see how they're stacking up as the WAC Championships loom.
- Emily Stutesman ended the first night of action with an emphatic performance, taking first place with a time of 34:33.80, while also recording a personal best in the process. This time also improved her standings in the NM State all-time records, moving into second place.
- Bailey Beene kicked off the weekend with a personal best performance in the javelin throw, breaking her previous mark of 43.48 meters with a best new mark of 45.09m - taking fourth place in the event overall.
- Makiya Moore broke past her previous best of 53.91 meters in the hammer throw with a 54.68-meter toss – the second-best mark in her heat. Emily Birch broke her personal record with her first toss in the hammer throw, setting a mark of 61.02 meters – a mark she broke previously this season at the West Texas Spring Open (March 18) with a 60.08-meter performance – finishing sixth overall in the event.
- Terice Steen proved herself amongst elite talent in the 400m hurdles, recording a fifth-place finish after posting a final time of 59.39.
- The 4x400 relay team of Jhana Downie, T'Erica Boyd, Jahnya Hill, Terice Steen and Breanna Moss teamed up to finish sixth with a time of 3:41.42. The 4x100 team of Sierra Brewer, Jhana Downie, Terice Steen, Grace Pendarvis and Aliyah Logan also captured a sixth-place finish, posting a final time of 45.74.
'Round the Region
- During the outdoor track & field season, the top-48 student-athletes in their respective regions get invited to the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, California (May 24-27th), a precursor to the NCAA Championships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field in Austin, Texas (June 7-10th).
- At the halfway point of the season, multiple Aggies are currently in position to qualify.

- The Aggies put together a solid string of performances, led by a trio of first-place finishes from Makiya Moore (Discus), Mariah Humphrey (Javelin) and Micah Too (Men's 1500m).

- Rebecca Green managed a runner-up finish, recording a toss of 13.45m. Makiya Moore finished close behind in third with a toss of 13.31, a new personal best.
- Makiya Moore led the way in the discus, recording a toss of 49.61m for her third victory in the event this season. Rebecca Green came away with third-place, posting a mark of 39.84.
- Mariah Humphrey tallied her fourth first-place finish in the javelin this season, taking the gold with a toss of 45.41m.
- Cole Shugart and Anekin Hetman finished neck and neck in the event, Shugart edging out a second-place finish with a time of 2:00.27, a personal best.
