Aggies Sit in Fifth After One Round at WAC Championships

BLAINE, Wash. –
After 18 holes at the WAC Women's Golf Championship, NM State finds itself in fifth place. While four spots off the lead, NM State is separated from the leader, Sam Houston, by just eight shots.
 
On the front nine holes, NM State struggled to get into a rhythm, birdieing just twice as a team. Senior Alison Gastelum carded both birdies, finishing with a 35 (-1) before the turn. After the turn, Emma Bunch posted the Aggies low-score, firing an even 36.
 
Bunch and Gastelum remain tied heading into the second round. Both women sit at 73 (+1) and share a seventh-place tie. The Aggie duo trails leader Samantha Bruce of Seattle U by two strokes entering day two.
 
As a team, NM State birdied 62 times on Sunday, sharing the lead for the field with Grand Canyon. Gastelum sits tied for second in the field on Par 5s, shooting an average of 4.50 throughout the first 18 holes.
