BLAINE, Wash. – Two rounds into the WAC Women's Golf Championships, NM State has climbed into third place. The Aggies passed Grand Canyon and Seattle on Monday, shooting 292 as a team. Entering Tuesday's final round, the Aggie sit just one shot behind second-place California Baptist and eight shots behind Sam Houston, who leads the pack.
After a slow start on Saturday,
Valentina Origel kicked her WAC Championships run into gear on Monday. The Irapuato, Mexico native shot a 71 (-1) on Monday, climbing 24 spots on the leaderboard. Origel birdied four times without a bogey between holes seven and eighteen to shake off another sluggish start.
Entering the day tied with
Alison Gastelum for fifth,
Emma Bunch remains inside the top five entering the final round of play. Bunch fired a 73 (+1) on Monday and enters the final round at just two-over.
Going into the final round, Gastelum also remains in the hunt for an individual title. She will begin Tuesday in a tie for eleventh place, shooting 149 (+5) throughout the tournament.
After carding just five birdies as a team on Sunday, NM State stepped up the pace on Monday with 14. Origel and
Meiji Tungprapunvong split the team lead in the second round with four birdies apiece.
On Tuesday, NM State will be paired in the final grouping. Alongside California Baptist and Sam Houston, the Aggies will tee off at 10:00 a.m. PT with Bunch joining the final tee time at 10:40 a.m. PT.
Second Round Notes
- Emma Bunch remains inside the top five as an individual, shooting 146 (+2) through the first two rounds.
- Meiji Tungprapunvong birdies holes 17 and 18 to bring her score to 74 (+2).
- Valentina Origel finished Monday 11 strokes better than her Sunday round. Origel finished four-under over the last 12 holes, firing a 71 (-1) on the day.
- The team 292 was nine strokes better than NM State shot on Sunday.
- NM State will begin teeing off at 10:00 a.m. PT on Tuesday. The Aggies will be in the final grouping with California Baptist and Sam Houston.
