ARLINGTON, Texas – Following a stellar weekend in which she helped lead the Aggies to a perfect 2-0 record in WAC play, freshman
Anna Pinaieva earned recognition as the WAC Singles Player of the Week.
The Brovary, Ukraine, native secured two wins at the No. 1 position for the Aggies while dropping just five total games across four sets against the top players from Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin.
On Friday, Pinaieva tallied a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over SHSU's Paula Cerda – a match in which she won 11 straight games before Cerda earned her first win. Two days later, Pinaieva moved to 4-1 in WAC play as she knocked off SFA's Alkmini Giannakogiorgou in straight sets. The 6-2, 6-2 score led Pinaieva to her 10
th win on the season, tying her with
Lisa Zhu and
Miranda Bishard for most singles wins by an Aggie this year. The standout freshman has lost back-to-back matches just once this season and has tallied victories in five of her last six matches.
The weekly honor marks the first weekly award for the NM State women's tennis program since
Bella Nguyen was named WAC Singles Player of the Week on March 2, 2021.
Pinaieva and the Aggies will be back in action this weekend as they hit the road to take on Abilene Christian and Tarleton on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. NM State will conclude its road trip with a match against Big 12 foe Baylor on Sunday.
