RESULTS
EL PASO, Texas – After a whirlwind weekend consisting of four meets across two states over three days, NM State returns to action this week at the UNM Spring Invite. While the team in totality will not be participating in the main event held in Albuquerque, members of the hammer throw team will head down to El Paso, Texas on Friday morning. This marks the first time the Aggies will compete at UTEP's Kidd Field since 2019.
The Starting Line
- NM State heads to Kidd Field for the first time since 2019, when the team competed in the UTEP Springtime.
- This is the second straight season the Aggies compete as part of the New Mexico Spring Invite.
- Following the Spring Invite, the Aggies will compete again in Albuquerque at the Don Kirby Tailwind Open on Thursday, April 20th – their sixth meet hosted by the University of New Mexico in the 2023 calendar year (indoor and outdoor season).
Back Track | Texas Relays/Bobcat Invitational/Mike Fanelli Classic/Stanford Invitational | 3.30-4.1
- Terice Steen lapped her own school record in the 400m hurdles for the second weekend in a row, posting a time of 59.07, while also helping the 4x400 team – along with T'Erica Boyd, Jhana Downie and Jahnya Hill – to set the all-time NM State record with a time of 3:39.39.
- T'Erica Boyd took to the track on a windy day at the Bobcat Invitational, racing to a new personal best in the 100m hurdles with a wind-assisted time of 13.91 (3.9 m/s) while finishing in seventh place.
- Aliyah Logan continued to prove she's one of the best hurdlers in the nation, taking third in the 100m hurdles at the Bobcat Invitational with a time of 13.63. Valissa Brown followed shortly after, coming in fifth place with a time of 13.77 – her second week in a row with a top five finish in the event.
- A multitude of Aggies from the men's side of the cross-country team made an appearance at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, partaking in the 5000m run. Collins Yego crushed his previous best in the event, finishing sixth in his heat and 30th overall in a field of more than 185 studeny-athletes with a time of 14:38.15. Freshman Adam Biwott ran in the event for the first time, recording a time of 14:53.88 en route to a 57th place finish. Micah Too joined in on the fun, improving on his previous best time with a tally of 15:14.90 to nab 81st. Nick Ortiz became the fourth member of NM State to record a new personal record in the event, racing his way to a time of 15:44.43.
'Round the Region
- During the outdoor track & field season, the top-48 student-athletes in their respective regions get invited to the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, California (May 24-27th), a precursor to the NCAA Championships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field in Austin, Texas (June 7-10th).
- At the halfway point of the season, multiple Aggies are currently in position to qualify.
One Year Ago… | April 7, 2022 | New Mexico Spring Invite
- One year ago to the day, the Aggies competed at the very same meet – dominating the field with eight first place finishes.
- Mariah Humphrey (42.63m) and Bailey Beene (36.02m) placed first and second, respectively, in the javelin throw.
- The 4x100m relay team of Grace Pendarvis, Sierra Brewer, Jhana Downie, Asjah Wallace, and Valissa Brown take the top spot with a time of 45.05.
- A trio of Aggie sprinters swept the top spots as Grace Pendarvis finished first with a wind adjusted time of 11.70 while Jhana Downie finished second with a wind adjusted time of 11.80 and Sierra Brewer finished third with at wind adjusted time of 12.00.
- Jhana Downie took first with a time of 23.90, placing her sixth all time in school history.
- A pair of Aggies took the top two spots as Terice Steen finished first with a time of 1:00.55 and Israel Swanson finished second posting a time of 1:03.39.
- Sophomore Rebecca Green placed first throwing for a personal best of 14.35m, placing her fifth all-time in school history.
- Makiya Moore recorded a throw of 46.52m, placing her seventh in school records and first in the competition.
