ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After trailing by nine after two innings, NM State continued to fight against in-state rival New Mexico. The comeback effort came up short for NM State as the game was called in the eighth inning due to lightning in the Albuquerque area. When the game went final, the Aggies were trailing to Lobos by a score of 14-6.
New Mexico jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the first two innings. After scoring a run in the first, the Lobos pieced together nine consecutive hits to open the eight-run second. By the end of the second inning, NM State had used three pitchers and was well into the bullpen.
The Aggies started clawing at the deficit in the third inning. After
Mitch Namie scored on a wild pitch,
Kevin Jimenez ripped the 54th double of his career, plating a pair of runs to make the score 9-3. The Lobos immediately answered with three runs on two long balls in the bottom of the inning, pushing the New Mexico lead back to nine.
Hunter Antillon tripled for the second time in 2023 to plate a run in the fourth inning. Shortly after, Antillon scampered home on a wild pitch, cutting the Lobo lead to seven.
Once again, the Lobos pushed the lead to nine runs in the fifth inning. For the Aggies,
Christian Perez led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to left field.
Due to a lightning storm rolling into Albuquerque, the contest was deemed final in the eighth inning. The Aggies comeback attempt fell short in the Duke City as New Mexico took a 14-6 ballgame and regained control of the season series.
