LAS CRUCES, N.M. – "Focusing on staying in the moment and trusting the process." A simple concept, but easier said than done. This was the mindset of
Aliyah Logan as she put together an impressive performance at the MLK Invitational, hosted by New Mexico. Logan, a senior from Markham, Ontario, Canada, once again broke her school record in the 60m hurdles, posting a time of 8.24 seconds.
Joining Logan in setting program records, senior and New Mexico native
Rebecca Green posted a personal best of 15.76m (51-8.50") to break a mark that had been held since 2006, when Erin Streater recorded a toss of 15.54m (51-0"). The 4x400 team tallied the third-fastest mark in program history and took home the gold with a time of 3:38.80.
Competing in the 300m for the first time in her career,
Jhana Downie did what she does best – recording dominant performances. The senior from Sunrise, Florida posted a time of 37.79 to take sixth place in her only event of the afternoon. NMJC transfer
Mickaliliah Vassell recorded the second-best time among the Aggies, posting a time of 39.17 to take 13
th.
Suiting up for the first time during outdoor season,
Thobile Amon took her talents to the 800m run, an event where she already holds the second-best time in program history. The lone member of NM State in the top-ten, Amon posted a time of 2:13.09 to tally a sixth-place finish. Debuting for the Crimson & White last weekend,
Nia Allison ran in the event for the first time, posting a mark of 2:21:58.
In the mile run, as has been the case since they arrived on the NM State campus,
Maggie Gibbs and
Emily Stutesman led the Aggies with times of 5:03.47 (tenth place) and 5:17.90 (16
th) respectively. After recording a strong performance last weekend at the Stan Scott Memorial,
Jordan Torres posted a new personal best in the mile, recording a time of 5:29.03.
The lone Aggie to make it through the 60m hurdle prelims with a time of 8.35,
Aliyah Logan had her sights set on more when she lined up for the 60m hurdle finals. Bounding off the line, Logan raced down the track and finished in third place with a time of 8.24 – besting her own record of 8.27 set at the 2023 Corky Classic.
Already possessing the second-best mark in NM State history,
Rebecca Green took her performance to another level on Saturday afternoon. Taking sixth with a mark of 15.76 (51-8.50"), Green recorded a new school record, overtaking a record that has stood for nearly 15 years. "Throughout my whole series of throws, I felt pretty good and consistent but knew I had more in me!" said Green, following the performance. "On my final throw I felt I had nothing to lose so I gave all I had and everything turned out great! I know there's still more in the tank for the future."
Competing for the first time this season,
Alesha Lane put forth a strong performance in the weight throw, recording a mark of 12.94m (42-5.50"). After making her first appearance for the Crimson & White last weekend,
Kamryn Cadle improved to a mark of 12.88m (42-3.25"). Fellow freshman and Albuquerque native Sammone Cauley made her NM State debut in the shot put, posting a mark of 9.91m (32-6.25"). Cauely also competed in the weight throw, recording a distance of 9.86m (32-4.25").
The 4x400 relay closed the afternoon for the Aggies, with two teams competing in the Crimson & White. Racing in the events most competitive heat, the foursome of
Terice Steen,
Mickaliliah Vassell,
Jhana Downie and
Jahnya Hill broke away from the competition and secured a first-place finish with a time of 3:38.80 – the third fastest mark in program history. The 'B' team of
Aliyah Logan,
Sierra Brewer,
Breanna Moss and
Grace Pendarvis posted a time of 3:55.89.
