Aggies Open Spring Season with Shutout Win Over Western New Mexico

NM State returns to NM State Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon to host Weber State at 2:30 p.m.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Thursday afternoon, the Aggies kicked off their spring season and got off on the right foot as they defeated in-state foe Western New Mexico, 7-0, at the NM State Tennis Center.

With two matches in the next two days, NM State did its best to make quick work of the Mustangs as WNMU combined to win just 11 sets across seven matches on a cool day in the City of Crosses.

The Aggies opened the meet with a pair of wins in doubles play, including a dominant 6-1 win from the duo of Lisa Zhu and Valeriia Ivanovskaia at the No. 2 spot. Meanwhile, Anna Pinaieva and Natsuki Nishimura collected their first doubles win of the season – defeating the Mustangs' Lina Leite and Mann-Ning Li 6-4.

With a one-point advantage in hand, the Aggies began singles play where four of the five NM State players allowed their opponent to walk away with just one set victory. On court one, Anna Pinaieva knocked off her opponent, 6-1, 6-0, while one court over, Whitney Moon posted the identical score against the Mustangs' No. 4 player.

Lisa Zhu also picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mann-Ning Li to represent the Aggies on the No. 2 line. Valeriia Ivanovskaia was the first to wrap up her match as she won the first set 6-0 before claiming the match with a 6-1 win in the second set. Lastly, Varvara Nikolaeva claimed the first spring singles win of her Aggie career as she bested Gabby Blumberg by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
