Aggies Fall in Hooten’s Return to Huntsville

Jordan Rawls led with 18 points; Femi Odukale finished with 17 points

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – After coming off a 2-0 homestand in Las Cruces, the Aggies hit the road seeking their first road win in the Johnson Coliseum during the Hooten era. In their first meeting since Hooten lead Sam Houston to victory in the Pan American Center 75-62, NM State fell to Sam Houston 67-79 to move to 3-2 in conference play.  

Jordan Rawls led all Aggie scorers with 18 points, going 8-15 from the field. Femi Odukale was right behind him with 17 points on the night going 6-6 from the free throw line. This is hist first time going 100% from the free throw line this season.  

First Half 

  • Coming out of the gate, Damon Nicholas Jr set the tone for the Bearkats with a right corner three pointer to put Sam Houston in the lead early on. On the following possession, Kaosi Ezeagu made his presence known in front of his former school and teammates with a putback dunk to give NM State their first points of the contest.  

  • With 18:01 left in the first the Bearkats would then go on a 10-2 run that included another beyond the arc shot for Nicholas Jr from the right corner and stretch the lead to 13-4 in Sam Houston's favor. 

  • After enduring the Bearkat run, over the next 10 minutes the Aggies returned the favor and went a massive 22-6 to take the lead and go up six points with 5:52 left in the first half of play. During this run NM State had six players score points with Odukale leading with seven points in the time span.  

  • To finish off the first half, Sam Houston managed to pull of a 14-7 run that ended with a Lamar Wilkerson three pointer to end off the first half and give the Bearkats the lead 38-37. 

Second half 

  • To start the second half, Robert Carpenter got the Aggies on the board first with strong layup. Following that possession, the Bearkats would turn back on the heat and spark an 11-4 run featuring five points from Davon Barnes. Over the next four minutes of play, the Aggies started a 12-6 run of their own to shorten the lead with Rawls contributing six points to make the score 53-55. 

  • Over the next five minutes it was a back and forth scoring battle between the two and made the score 59-62, After a Marcus Boykin layup the Bearkats didn't look back.  

  • During the remaining 7:54 to play, Sam Houston put 17 points to the Aggies eight to pull out the win against Hooten's squad 67-79 

NUMBERS OF NOTE 

  • Jordan Rawls finished with a team-high 18 points. In his efforts, Rawls attempted 15 field goals to mark the most by any Aggie this season. 

  • NM State is now 2-4 in the all-time series versus Sam Houston, including 0-2 in Huntsville, Texas. 

  • By going a perfect 6-6 at the charity stripe, Femi Odukale becomes the third Aggie to turn in this stat line. As a team, NM State finished the game 15-16 from the free throw line to mark the best free-throw percentage when shooting more than five free throws. 

  • In his return to his former school, Kaosi Ezeagu turned in a season-high three blocks, marking the second most in a game by any Aggie this season. 

  • The Aggies finished with their lowest assist total of the season with four against the Bearkats. 

  • Christian Cook logged a pair of blocks to mark a career high for the junior from Oklahoma City. 

  • Tanahj Pettway hauled in three rebounds to notch a new season high.
