LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Records are made to be broken. This seems to be the approach from the Aggies as of late, with four school records falling over the past two meets. At the MLK Invitational on Jan. 20, senior
Rebecca Green broke an NM State record that stood for nearly 20 years with a toss of 15.76 meters (51-8.50"). The Los Alamos natives' school record would last just two weeks after launching a distance of 16.10m (52-10").
Along with Green, multiple Aggies made their mark on day two of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
Leading off the final day from Albuquerque was the shot put, where Green's mark of 16.10m not only gave her a sixth-place finish but also earned her qualification for the USATF Indoor Championships, held at the Albuquerque Convention Center Feb. 16-17.
Second year Aggie
Alesha Lane tallied a season best with a mark of 13.10m (42-11.75"), while Freshman
Ladina Kobler posted the second-best performance in her young Crimson & White career, recording a mark of 14.43m (47-4.25") to take 12
th place. Fellow freshman
Kamryn Cadle posted a distance of 11.90m (39-0.50"), finishing second in her flight.
After competing in the 200m dash for the first time on Friday, sophomore
Cameron Hodges returned to the triple jump – an event where she earned Second Team All-Conference honors last season.
Tallying a best mark of 11.87m (38-11.50"), Hodges finished second in her heat, recording her second-best indoor performance – bested only by her jump of 11.93m (39-1.75") in the season opening Stan Scott Memorial on Jan. 13.
Earning CUSA Female Track Athlete of the Week following her school-record breaking performance with a time of 8.24 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles on Jan. 13, senior
Aliyah Logan picked up right where she left off. Entered into a competitive heat with three-time All-American Talie Bonds running unattached, Logan once again posted a time of 8.24 seconds, tying her own school record and recording a runner-up finish in the heat.
Competing in the mile, freshman
Nia Allison improved on her time from the Stan Scott Memorial (5:14.87), crossing the line with a time of 5:13.05. Taking eighth overall, this became the third top-ten finish for Allison in her first four events and gave her the second-fastest mile time by an Aggie this season.
Taking her talents to an indoor meet for the first time since the 2020 season, senior
Vanessa Gracian posted a time of 5:37.86, taking fifth place in her heat. Joining Gracian in the heat was junior
Mari Gallegos, partaking in indoor competition for the first time in her collegiate career. The Albuquerque native finished with a time of 5:39.78.
The lone NM State entrant in the seeded 400m dash, junior
Mickaliliah Vassell continued her strong weekend posting a lifetime best of 55.10 seconds. Taking a runner-up finish in her heat and recording a top-ten finish (ninth overall), this gave Vassell the fourth-fastest time in program history.
Making her second event debut in as many days after competing in the 600m run on Friday night, freshman
Marlene Mosqueda was the lone Aggie to suit up in the 800m run, recording a time of 2:31.81 to finish her weekend.
The 4x400 relay team closed the Crimson & White's time at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, competing in a crowded event; 21 teams and 84 athletes total spread across five heats. Running in a heat with Iowa, Arizona and former conference opponent Utah Valley, the foursome of
Jhana Downie,
Terice Steen,
Jahnya Hill and
Mickaliliah Vassell crossed the line with a time of 3:39.33. This was the second fastest time in the heat, and the fifth-fastest overall – with the Aggies the highest-placing non-'Power Five' program.
UP NEXT
For the third and final time this season, NM State will return to the Duke City for the Don Kirby Invitational, taking place Feb. 9-10. This will serve as the regular-season finale for the Aggies, who will have a week-long break before heading off for the CUSA Track & Field Championships, hosted in Lynchburg, Virginia, from Feb. 23-24.
