NM State Baseball loses to #24 Texas Tech 9-7

The Aggies three run push in the ninth fell short by just two runs.

LUBBOCK, Texas - NM State Aggies fell to the #24 Texas Tech Red Raiders in their outing 9-7 today, March 13, in Lubbock, Texas. The Aggies outhit the Red Raiders by four and held them scoreless in five innings.  

The Aggies opened the scoring early thanks to a lead-off double by Keith Jones II. He would then be driven in on an RBI single by Titus Dumitru who would extend his hitting streak to eight games.  

Starting on the mound in the bottom of the first for the Aggies is left-handed pitcher Josh Sharman. He would give up two runs on three hits.  

The Aggies would take back the lead in the third on a solo home run by Dumitru, his first of the year. Edwin Martinez-Pagani would earn an RBI on a groundout to give the Aggies two runs in the third.  

In the bottom of the third Treyjen Meza would come into relieve Sharman, he would close out his outing with two innings pitched giving up four hits and two runs. In the third the Red Raiders would once again tie the game up on a solo home run by Dylan Maxcey. 

In the fourth Zack Zwaschka came into the game for Meza. Meza's line would close at one inning pitched, one run, one hit, one walk and one strikeout.  

Zwaschka was unable to make it out of the innings as he would be replaced by Connor Wylde. In the fourth, the Red Raiders put up six runs to go up by six for their second lead of the day.  

The Aggies managed to score a run in the top of the sixth on a Damone Hale single to right field that scored Austin Corbett. In the bottom of the sixth Aaron Treloar came to the mound in relief of Wylde. Wylde finished the day out with 1.2 innings pitched, two hits, one run and one strikeout.  

Aaron Treloar would only throw for one inning in his outing, he recorded one hit and no runs allowed, forcing two flyouts and one groundout. Saul Soto came into relief for Treloar in the seventh, striking out two Red Raiders, only allowing one hit and no runs.  

Scoring would slow down for both teams until the top of the ninth when the Aggies managed to get within two of the Red Raiders. Gore opened the scoring in the ninth with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Dumitru. Gianni Horvat then came into the game as a pinch hitter and blasted a two-run home run.  

The late push in the ninth fell just short of giving the Aggies their first road victory.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Gianni Horvat hit his first home run of the season in the ninth.  
  • Dumitru improved his hit streak to eight games.  
  • Both Dumitru and Jones had four hits in the outing.  
  • Gore and Namie each had two hits on the day.  
  • With his two-run home run Horvat earned his first multi-RBI game of the season. 
  • Seven different Aggie arms were featured on the mound.
