TUCSON, Ariz. – Returning to action for the first time since competing at the CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 24, the Aggies journeyed to the University of Arizona for day one of the Willie Williams Classic. On day one,
Bailey Beene posted a first-place finish in the javelin, nearly matching her personal best, while
Jordan Torres posted a runner-up result in the 3000m steeplechase – running in the event for the first time in her collegiate career. Overall, the Crimson & White recorded five top-five finishes, along with multiple personal records set.
Kicking off the weekend with the hammer throw,
Miranda Tcheutchoua paced the Aggies once again, recording a fifth-place result after posting a mark of 55.93 meters (183-6"). Tcheutchoua has posted the best finish among Aggies in the weight throw or hammer throw in all but one meet this season. In the javelin,
Bailey Beene showed no rust while taking home the gold medal with a mark of 48.79m (160-1").
Freshman
Ladina Kobler claimed the top finish among the Crimson & White in the shot put, taking fourth with a final result of 14.50m (47-7"). This is the best mark for the Amerwsil, Switzerland native since opening her NM State career with a mark of 14.66m (48-1.25") at the Stan Scott Memorial on Jan. 13.
Returning from injury,
Angelina Killings posted a mark of 4.97m (16-3.75") in the long jump.
In the 5000m run,
Leah Clark took home 11
th place, finishing with a time of 18:24.09, her best as a member of NM State. Competing in her first meet as an Aggie, Albuquerque native
Trista Cordova took 16
th (19:05.34), while fellow freshman
Murrie Dodge posted a time of 20:07.29.
Jordan Torres suited up in the 3000m steeplechase for the first time in her career, tallying a runner-up finish after recording a time of 11:43.53.
The busiest event of the weekend, the 1500m run saw nine Aggies competing, including seven in the same heat.
Maggie Gibbs (4:32.78) finished first among NM State student athletes, finishing in sixth while tallying a new personal best. Emily Stutseman took 11
th after recording the fastest time in her heat with a result of 4:39.61. Along with Gibbs,
Thulisile Amon (4:42.32),
Nia Allison (4:48.08),
Vanessa Gracian (4:49.34),
Kayla O'Connell (4:51.94), Marlene Mosquesa (4:58.43),
Mari Gallegos (4:58.65) and Anglea Korte (5:02.20) improved to record new personal bests.
Tyler Goode and Anekin Hetman suited up for the Aggies in the men's edition of the 1500m run, with Hetman finishing fourth in a very competitive heat with a time of 4:02.20, while Goode posted a time of 4:29.34.
Closing day one at the Willie Williams Classic was Thomas Croshaw in the men's 5000m run. The true freshman from Albuquerque crossed the line seventh overall, recording a mark of 14:49.62.
