NM State Sends Team to Pair of Meets in California and Texas

| By:

The Aggies will compete at both the Stanford Invitational and the Texas Relays this week.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The time to rest is when the season is over. After competing at the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson this past weekend, the Aggies face a short turnaround, splitting into two groups to compete at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. Last time out, NM State tallied a pair of new school records as both the 4x100 relay team and the 4x400 relay teams surpassed previous program bests.

Starting Line
  • Splitting time between Palo Alto and Austin, the Aggies will run in the Texas Relays from Thursday, Mar. 28 through Mar. 30, while participating in the Stanford Invitational on Mar. 29 and Mar. 30.
  • The Aggies are slated to compete in 15 different events across the two meets, competing in 11 at the Stanford Invitational and six at the Texas Relays.
  • Teams slated to compete at these meets include nationally ranked programs such as No. 3 TCU, No. 9 Ohio State, No. 12 Clemson, No. 16 Texas Tech, No. 19 Oklahoma, No. 22 BYU and No. 23 California, along with hosts Stanford and Texas, respectively.

Back Track | Willie Williams Classic | 3.22-3.23
  • In the javelin, Bailey Beene showed no rust while taking home the gold medal with a mark of 48.79m (160-1"). This mark currently stands as the 29th best in the nation.
  • Jordan Torres suited up in the 3000m steeplechase for the first time in her career, tallying a runner-up finish after recording a time of 11:43.53.
  • Getting the second and final day of action underway with the 4x100 relay, the quartet of Sierra Brewer, Jhana Downie, Grace Pendarvis and Mickaliliah Vassell put together a school-record time of 44.64 seconds – finishing in first place in the process. This bests the previous fastest time of 44.66 that has been held since 2018, and ranks 20th in the country.
  • Closing the weekend, the 'A' team of Terice Steen, Breanna MossJhana Downie and Mickaliliah Vassell ran away from the competition – and the NM State record book – convincingly taking first over second-place Arizona with a time of 3:35.78. This time bests the previous mark set at the 2023 Desert Heat Classic (3:39.39), and is the tenth-fastest time across the NCAA.

One Year Ago… | Texas Relays/Bobcat Invitational/Stanford Invitational | 3.29.23-4.1.23
  • The 4x400 relay team of Terice Steen, T'Erica Boyd, Jhana Downie and Jahnya Hill posted a blazing time of 3:39.39 at the Texas Relays, supplanting the (then) current school record with their time of 3:39.49.
  • Aliyah Logan continued to prove she's one of the best hurdlers in the nation, taking third in the 100m hurdles at the Bobcat Invitational with a time of 13.63.
  • Maggie Gibbs recorded a personal best in the 5000m at the Stanford Invitational, posting a time of 16:29.86 to finish in ninth place. Miranda Tcheutchoua topped the list of Aggies in the hammer throw, finishing in fourth place with a final distance of 57.50m (188-7") – this marks the third top-five finish of her career and the first during outdoor season.
