THE OPENING TIP
• After a tough defensive battle in their first game in Cancún, the Aggies walked away with a 57-45 win over UC Irvine to move to 5-0 for the first time since 1990. NM State now turns its focus to its next matchup against Georgia State on a quick turnaround for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
• The win over UC Irvine marked the Aggies' first victory over the Anteaters since their last meeting on Nov. 11, 2023, when UC Irvine earned a 91-74 win in Irvine, California.
• Up next is Georgia State, as NM State closes out its time in Cancún with a first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Panthers enter the matchup as the Aggies look to remain undefeated in the international portion of the tournament and move to 6-0 to start the year.
FAST START
• The Aggies are off to their best start in a long time, as the Aggies are 5-0, which marks the program's best start since 1990-91.
THE WRZESZCZ EFFECT
• Senior guard Anthony Wrzeszcz remains one of the premier sharpshooters in Conference USA and has taken his efficiency to another level early in the 2025-26 campaign.
• Wrzeszcz now ranks 32nd nationally in three-point percentage, knocking down 52.6% of his attempts from long range. To this point in the season, he is 10-19 from deep, continuing to provide a reliable perimeter threat in NM State's offensive attack.
• His shooting clip places him among the top-tier long-range marksmen in CUSA, as he ranks second in three-point percentage only behind Liberty's Brent Decker who is shooting at a 62.5% clip.
BRINGING THE "JUICE"
• Through the early stretch of the season, Julius "Juice" Mims has been the anchor of the Aggie frontcourt, continuing to impact winning on both ends of the floor. Mims enters the Cancun Challenge averaging 12.3 points and a team-best 9.0 rebounds per contest, ranking second on the roster in scoring and serving as NM State's most consistent interior presence.
• Mims is coming off his first double-double of the season in the win over Samford, delivering a dominant 17 point, 11 rebound performance. He put together one of the most efficient outings in recent Aggie history – going a perfect 7-7 from the field and 2-2 from beyond the arc.
• His efficiency continues to stand out on a national scale as he now ranks fourth in the country in field goal percentage, shooting 75% from the floor. On the glass, he ranks second in Conference USA in rebounds per game, trailing only Liberty's Zach Cleveland (10.0 RPG).
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
• Georgia State comes into the Cancun Challenge led by head coach Jonas Hayes, who is now in his fourth season guiding the Panthers. Hayes is looking to build off last year's 14-19 overall record, which included an 8-10 mark in Sun Belt play.
• Offensively, the Panthers rely heavily on Jalani Hamilton, who paces the team with 16.3 points per game. Hamilton's scoring presence and ability to generate offense at all three levels make him the primary threat NM State must contain.
• On the boards, Georgia State is anchored by Joah Chappelle, the team's leading rebounder at 7.2 per game. Chappelle's physicality and energy on the interior set the tone for the Panthers' approach on the glass.
