NM State Drops Friday Afternoon Affair

The Aggies move on to face Southern Utah on Thursday, Dec. 2.

WESTWEGO, LA. – Returning to action at the Alario Center, NM State (1-5) fell in a match-up with Fresno State (4-3) in its second and final game of the Big Easy Classic, by a score of 64-49.

For the first time this season, NM State secured the opening tip, swiftly earning the first points of the contest following a Lucía Yenes layup. The senior forward would add another basket to keep the game even 4-4 early. Six straight points by Fresno State in the middle of the quarter put the Aggies behind, though an Imani Warren score would make it 14-8 at the end of the first.

A defensive shift in the second quarter swung momentum the Aggies' way, using five Bulldog turnovers and eight offensive rebounds to outscore Fresno State 14-11 in the frame. Following a 14-rebound performance on Thursday, Morane Dossou notched back-to-back NM State scores, setting an NM State high for the junior transfer with four points. A layup by Warren and a buzzer-beating bucket by Iyana Beh, the Aggies closed the quarter on a 8-2 run, sending the game to break trailing by a score of 25-22.

At the half, the Crimson & White had doubled the Bulldogs in rebounds (28-14), while holding an edge in paint points (20-16), second chance points scoring (8-2) and bench scoring (8-7).

The third quarter saw a reversal from the second, as the Bulldogs found success at the 3-point line – putting in just one bucket in the opening half, but four in the third stanza. Seven turnovers from the Crimson & White saw the Bulldogs convert for 14 points, sending the game into the final ten minutes with a score of 50-38.

Adding to her personal NM State best point total, Morane Dossou opened the third with her third layup of the contest, though the Bulldogs would respond with a 10-0 run over the ensuing five minutes to make it a 60-40 contest. While the Aggies would hold Fresno State to just two baskets in the closing four minutes of play, it was not enough as the Crimson & White fell by a final score of 64-49.

Despite the Aggies tying a season-best with three 3-pointers on the afternoon, this became the fifth contest in the team's first six games where they have failed to score at least 50 points.

QUOTABLES
Graduate guard Loes Rozing, on the team's performance against Fresno State: "I think we are still in the process of figuring out how to play well together. We have a lot of talent but we haven't been able to find a flow, especially on offense. As a collective we did a better job rebounding, which was one of our focus points, but still, we struggle with our turnovers. It will be important for us to take care of the ball, win the rebounding game and move more off the ball on offense to get our next win."

Senior forward Lucía Yenes, on the team's performance at the Big Easy Classic: "Overall we still have a lot to improve on, though I think we had more positives today than yesterday. We just have to keep being aggressive and consistent and that starts in practice."

Head Coach Jody Adams, on the matchup with Fresno State: "We continued to rebound the ball well in today's game, which was great to see. As well, It was great to see Loes [Rozing] get in the scoring column and continue to lead bravely.

As staff we need to look at some things and make some adjustments in practice over the next couple of days, and hopefully that will help us with our [basketball] IQ and confidence."

NM State heads back on the road next week, facing off with a pair of teams based in Utah. The action starts on Thursday, Dec. 2, with a match-up against Southern Utah. Tip-off is set for noon MT, with the game streaming live on ESPN+ and live stats available at nmstatesports.com/stats.
