Late Game Heroics Lift Aggies to Overtime Victory

Dossou 3-pointer ties game with less than one second in regulation.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NM State (4-8) returned home on Monday evening to kick off a three-game home stand with a contest against Eastern New Mexico (7-4, 3-0 LSC). While the in-state foe showed stiff resistance, the Aggies were able to come away with a 52-48 overtime win over the Greyhounds on Senior Night.

Both defenses were on the forefront in the early goings as the teams combined to go 2-14 across the first five minutes of action. For the Aggies, their first field goal came in the form of a 3-pointer from sharpshooter Anna Csenyi, who has now drained a triple in six of NM State's last seven games. Csenyi's three came as part of a 10-0 run that put the Aggies ahead 10-3 after ENMU had built an early 3-0 lead. Ultimately, NM State would limit the Greyhounds to just 13.3% from the floor in the first quarter to hold a 12-5 advantage after the first 10 minutes of action.

The Aggie offense again struggled to get going in the second quarter; however, a Marta Guilera layup through contact helped start a 6-0 run in less than a minute to give the home side an 18-9 advantage at the five-minute mark. Eventually, ENMU would trim the lead to just four following a 5-0 run late in the period, leaving the score at 20-16 at the break.

In the first half, the Aggies leaned heavily on their play in the post as 14 of their 20 points came in the paint. Additionally, Senoj Jones' six points off the bench helped the Aggies maintain an 8-2 advantage in points from reserves. For the freshman from Tyler, Texas, this matched a career high in points after 12 minutes of playing time.

NM State scored the first four points of the second half to build its lead back to eight points, but ENMU responded with five straight points of its own to bring the score to 24-21 with 6:46 remaining in the third stanza. The Aggies would push their lead back to seven points following a floater from Emma Christiano, but the Greyhounds would answer once again as they scored seven unanswered points to tie the game at 28 with 1:40 left in the quarter.

NM State would see just its second deficit of the game as the Greyhounds knocked down a 3-pointer to give the visitors a 31-30 lead just over one minute into the final quarter. However, Loes Rozing would have an immediate response as she connected on a triple of her own to put the Aggies back in front on the ensuing possession. ENMU then hit two more threes to lift the Greyhounds to a 37-33 lead with less than five minutes to play. While the Aggies would generate some good looks down the stretch, it would take a last-second 3-point heave from Morane Dossou to tie the game at 38 and send it into overtime.

The overtime period would prove to be the most successful offensively for the Crimson & White, as the Aggies would jump out to a four-point lead thanks to back-to-back baskets from Imani Warren and Lucía Yenes. Later, another Greyhound three would trim the Aggie lead to just one, but Warren would finish a layup through a foul to give the Aggies a five-point cushion. A quartet of free throws from Yenes and Warren put the Aggies up 50-43 to all but secure the victory on their home floor. Despite one final push from ENMU, the Aggies would escape with a 52-48 win.
