This past season, Mims appeared in 31 of Idaho's 33 games with 30 starts averaging 20.6 minutes per contest. He averaged 8.6 points and a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game, while leading the Vandals with 33 blocks on the year. Mims also posted the highest field goal percentage on the team, converting an impressive 66.1% of his attempts. His top scoring performance of the season came in a win over Evergreen State on Nov. 19, when he dropped 21 points on 8-11 shooting, while also adding six rebounds, a block, and a steal. He pulled down 13 rebounds in back-to-back games late in the season – including a career-high six offensive boards against Idaho State and a season-high 11 defensive rebounds against Weber State. Mims also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in a matchup at Washington State on Nov. 11.
As a junior, Mims started all 32 games and averaged 27.6 minutes per outing. He posted 11.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while shooting 63.3 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. He reached double figures in scoring 18 times, including a Division I career-high 23 points against UC Riverside on Dec. 21. He also delivered a standout performance in the opening round of the Big Sky Tournament, scoring 20 points on 9-11 shooting against Sacramento State – a shooting percentage that tied for the seventh-best in a single game in tournament history. That season, he swatted 48 shots – ranking seventh all-time in a single season at Idaho – and recorded five double-doubles, including a 15-point, 14-rebound effort in a road win at Montana State. Mims led the team in eight statistical categories and was the only player in the Big Sky Conference to average at least 10 points, seven rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. He also became the first Idaho player since 2017-18 to record at least 14 rebounds in three separate games during a single season.
Prior to his time in the Big Sky, Mims starred at North Idaho College, where he played two seasons with the Cardinals. As a sophomore in 2022-23, he started all 24 games and averaged 16.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per contest. He shot 58.3 percent from the field – ranking sixth in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) – and knocked down 41.3 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. He reached double figures in 23 of 24 games, highlighted by a career-best 29-point outing at Spokane Community College on Jan. 21. That year, Mims earned 2023 NWAC East Region Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named to the All-Region First Team for the second consecutive season. He also earned All-American honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches and helped guide the Cardinals to a perfect 28-0 record and a No. 1 seed in the NWAC Tournament. As a freshman, he started 20 of 21 games and led the team in scoring (17.4), rebounding (9.1) and blocks (0.9).
A native of Billings, Mont., Mims was a two-time all-state selection at Skyview High School. He earned 2020 Gatorade Montana Boys Player of the Year honors and also won a state title in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 9 inches.
QUOTABLE | Head Coach Jason Hooten
"Julius will bring so much versatility and athleticism to our team. He has been a consistent producer over his collegiate career, and we feel like his last year could be his best! His ability to defend 1-5 and rebound the ball over the rim, will give us something we lacked this past season. Julius and his family are a tremendous fit for Aggie Nation"
