Aggies Come Up Short in Home Opener

Four runs over the final three innings not enough to overcome early deficit

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NM State mounted multiple late‑inning pushes on Friday night at Presley Askew Field at Johnson Stadium, but an early Towson lead held up as the Aggies fell 8-7 in the home opener. NM State produced three multi‑run innings and outscored the Tigers 7-4 after the fourth but could not fully erase the early deficit.

Towson jumped ahead with two runs in each of the first two innings before adding two more in the second, but NM State responded with a three‑run surge in the bottom of the fifth. Bryce Campbell delivered an RBI single, followed by a Rulli two‑RBI single up the middle to bring the Aggies within 6–3.

In the seventh, Steve Solorzano walked and Aidan Taclas ripped a triple to right‑center to drive him in before Campbell added another RBI single, cutting the deficit to 8–5. The Aggies made one final push in the ninth as Solorzano hit a leadoff single and both he and Boston Vest later scored on a two‑RBI triple from Easton Rulli who hit a ball just off the top of the wall in left field, pulling NM State within one before the comeback attempt fell short.

NM State finished with eight hits, including multi-hit contributions from Solorzano, Campbell and Rulli, while the combination of Dyan Weekly and Carson Timmons tossed three scoreless innings to end the game.

NOTABLES
  • The Aggies recorded two triples, one from Taclas in the seventh and another from Rulli in the ninth. This is something the Aggies accomplished just three times last season.
  • Easton Rulli drove in four runs, including a game‑tightening two‑run triple in the bottom of the ninth. This also marked the first RBIs as an Aggie for the transfer from Central Arizona College. This also served as the first four-RBI game by an Aggie since April 27, 2025, when Bryce Campbell tallied four RBIs against MTSU.
  • Steve Solorzano reached base four times and scored three times, finishing with two hits to mark his first multi-hit game of the season.
  • The Aggie defense turned three double plays to mark the third time this season that NM State has recorded three double plays in one game.
  • The trio of Hazen Wright, Dylan Weekly and Carson Timmons allowed just four combined hits over the final six innings.
