DAVIS, Calif. – NM State wrapped up play at the Golden State Invitational on Saturday evening by earning a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Portland at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex. The Aggies competed in three matches over the weekend, falling to Nevada and UC Davis during Friday's doubleheader before bouncing back with the narrow win against Portland to finish the event with a 1-2 record.
MATCH ONE | NM State 0, Nevada 4
NM State opened the invitational with a morning matchup against Nevada but was unable to gain momentum as the Wolf Pack secured the doubles point and three singles victories to clinch the match.
In doubles play, Nevada claimed wins on courts two and three to take the early 1-0 lead. Greg Valente and Remy Tregoures defeated Holland Snell and Lance Urlaub 6-4 on court two, while Max Contet and Axel Huysmans earned a 6-1 victory over Laurendi Fischer and Patrick Lohmann at the No. 3 spot. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Roko Stipetic and Tobias Wallin went unfinished.
Nevada then sealed the match through singles competition, picking up straight-set victories on courts three, five and six. Axel Huysmans defeated Roko Stipetic 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, Greg Valente topped Lance Urlaub 6-3, 6-3 on court five and Nicolas Recoura earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Patrick Lohmann at the No. 6 position to secure the 4-0 result.
The remaining singles matches featuring Snell, Wallin and Matias Rojas were left unfinished once the Wolf Pack clinched the match.
MATCH TWO | NM State 1, UC Davis 4
Later Friday afternoon, the Aggies returned to the courts to face host UC Davis in their second match of the day.
The Aggies again dropped the doubles point as UC Davis posted wins on courts one and two. Lucas Bollinger and Kurt Miller defeated Stipetic and Wallin 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Dylan Paterson and Ivan Savkin earned a 6-1 victory over Snell and Rojas at the No. 2 position. The No. 3 doubles match between Lohmann/Urlaub and Nadaul Cheam/Kaveh Taheri was left unfinished.
UC Davis continued its strong play in singles, picking up straight-set victories on courts one, two and three to reach the four-point threshold. Bollinger defeated Snell 6-0, 6-1 at the top spot, while Taheri topped Wallin 6-3, 6-2 on court two. Eduardo Gonzalez followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Rojas at the No. 3 position.
NM State's lone point of the match came at No. 6 singles, where Laurendi Fischer earned a convincing 6-4, 6-0 win over Dylan Paterson. The remaining singles contests went unfinished once UC Davis secured the decisive fourth point.
MATCH THREE | NM State 4, Portland 3
The Aggies closed the weekend on a high note Saturday evening, edging Portland 4-3 in a tightly contested dual.
Portland claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three courts. Nikola Keremedchiev and Cade Fernando defeated Stipetic and Wallin 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Tom Garcia and Eli Noel earned a 6-4 victory over Snell and Fischer at the No. 3 position. NM State's lone doubles win came from Patrick Lohmann and Matias Rojas, who posted a 6-3 victory on court two.
NM State responded strongly in singles play, winning four courts to secure the comeback victory.
Snell delivered a key performance at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Tom Garcia, while Rojas followed with a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Stefan Skobelev on court four. Fischer added another point for the Aggies with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Tannor Binder at the No. 5 position.
Urlaub sealed the team victory at No. 6 singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Gian Manhas to clinch the 4-3 result for NM State.
UP NEXT
NM State will now enjoy a break in its schedule before returning to action later this month. The Aggies will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, on March 27 for a road matchup against Tulsa as they continue their spring campaign.
