Aggies Notch Four Event Wins in El Paso

NM State records 13 top-three finishes along with a host of personal bests.

EL PASO, TEXAS – NM State returned to the Lone Star State for their second meet in El Paso this season, the Sun City Classic. Overall, the team secured four event wins and 13 podium finishes with a limited roster for training purposes. 
 
WOMEN'S
 
The hammer throw kicked off the day's events, where Kamryn Cadle tallied the top finish among Aggies with a mark of 52.22 meters (171-4"), just shy of her personal best of 52.75m, set at the Miners Invitational in El Paso on March 21.
 
Julia Nystrand notched a third-place finish in the event with a mark of 50.13m – a personal best. Samonne Cauley (46.01m) and Avery Jordan (41.56m) also added career bests on the day.
 
Following four hours between events, NM State returned to the ring for the discus toss, where Alesha Lane tallied a first-place finish with a mark of 49.89m (163-8").
 
Freshman Avery Jordan (43.09m) Julia Nystrand (42.40m) finished second and third respectively, while Elli Breckenridge (38.88m) joined Jordan and Nystrand in setting personal bests in the event.
 
Junior Aja Johnson kicked off her strong afternoon with a new personal best mark of 5.76m (18-10.75"), taking second overall.
 
Freshman Abigail Beam posted the top time among Aggies in the 1500m, recording an altitude-adjusted time of 4:54.08@ in her event debut. Fellow first-year Brooke Kelly also made her event debut, tallying a mark of 5:05.54.
 
Running unattached, Melany Mosqueda posted a time of 5:11.87@ in the 1500m.
 
For the fourth consecutive meet, Sara McKee recorded a new personal best in the 100m hurdles, posting a time of 14.09, just outside the fastest marks in program history.
 
Presley Edwards tallied another first-place finish in the javelin in El Paso, posting a mark of 40.76m to earn her second collegiate event win.
 
El Paso native Aileen Alvarado recorded the second-best collegiate finish in the high jump at the Sun City Classic, posting a best mark of 1.65m (5-5").
 
Alyssa Crump recorded the fastest time among Crimson & White members with a new personal best of 11.83 seconds, while Sara McKee (12.35) also posted a new top time. Jaylah McDonnell recorded a season best of 12.09, while Aja Johnson made her event debut (12.14).
 
Later in the afternoon, Crump recorded another personal best in the 200m with a time of 24.28.
 
Competing unattached, freshman Ainsleigh Kasprick won her event debut in the 3000m steeplechase with an altitude-adjusted time of 11:28.15.
 
MEN'S
 
Derick Castellanos notched a collegiate best in the 1500m, taking first place with an altitude-adjusted time of 3:53.75. First-year Aggie and Las Cruces native Kobe Rodriguez made his event debut (4:04.97@), while Gabriel Uranga tallied a new personal best (4:05.99@).
 
Castellanos again led the Aggies later in the night in the 800m, posting a time of 1:58.70@, while Gabriel Uranga (2:02.46@) and Kobe Rodriguez (2:02.73) made their event debuts.
 
Closing action in the shot put, Alesha Lane earned her second event win of the day with a mark of 14.26m (46-9.50"). Kamryn Cadle and Julia Nystrand rounded out the top-three, as Avery Jordan recorded an outdoor best.
 
In all, the Aggies totaled four event wins, 13 top-three results and 14 personal bests.
 
UP NEXT
NM State makes a long trip out west to compete in the Beach Invitational and the Bryan Clay Invitational, in Long Beach, Calif, and Azusa, Calif., respectively. Action begins Thursday, April 16.
