BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – NM State responded in a big way on Sunday at Nick Denes Field as it battled to a 10-7 win over Western Kentucky to salvage the series against the Hilltoppers. With the win, the Aggies improve to 15-19 overall and 7-8 in Conference USA play.
The Aggies struck first as
Steve Solorzano managed a leadoff double and was eventually driven home by
Camden Kaufman in the opening frame. The Aggies added two more runs in the second when
Chris Daniels' single was later followed by a two-run home run by
Brandon Clizbe, extending the lead to 3-0.
NM State continued to keep the foot on the gas as Clizbe recorded his third RBI of the contest, bringing home Daniels who previously got aboard via a walk. Clizbe eventually came in to score himself as a result of a sacrifice fly from
Steve Solorzano, pushing the score to 5-0 in the fourth inning.
After
Colton Sneddon opened the day with three scoreless innings, WKU eventually got on the board as it plated three runs in the home half of the fourth inning to make it a two-run game. However, the Aggies immediately responded in the fifth as
Jonatan Clough doubled down the left field line and later came home on a
Easton Rulli RBI single. Rulli then crossed home on a
Boston Vest double to right center, giving the Aggies a 7-3 advantage.
Following a scoreless sixth, NM State extended its cushion with three runs in the seventh.
Camden Kaufman and Clough each got on base to start the inning and later moved into scoring position on a double steal. Kaufman and Clough were then driven in on a single from
Chris Daniels. Two batters later,
Brandon Clizbe added to his monster day with his third hit and fourth RBI as he brought in Daniels to push the score to 10-3.
The Hilltoppers produced their biggest inning of the day in the eighth as they used four hits to score four runs, but the comeback attempt would come up short as
Dylan Weekly was able to shut the door.
Clizbe finished with a multi‑hit performance, driving in key runs, while Solorzano reached base multiple times and scored. Kaufman, Clough, Rulli and Vest all contributed offensively as NM State produced runs in five different innings.
On the mound,
Jake Carvajal earned the win with effective relief work, steadying the game after early traffic. Carvajal tossed 1.2 innings, while not allowing a single hit.
