Aggies Top No. 25 Arizona State in Extra Inning Thriller

Tommy Meluskey hits two home runs in squad’s second ranked win of the season.

PHOENIX – NM State outlasted No. 25 Arizona State 10–9 in 11 innings on Wednesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, earning its second win this season over a ranked opponent and the program's fourth ranked victory under Head Coach Jake Angier. With the win, the Aggies improve to 17-22 on the year.

The Aggies set the tone early, pushing across two runs in the first inning. Jonatan Clough ripped an RBI triple to open the scoring before Chris Daniels followed with an RBI groundout for an early 2-0 lead. NM State added two more in the second, highlighted by a solo home run from Tommy Meluskey.

Arizona State responded with power in the middle innings, briefly moving ahead behind multiple home runs, but NM State answered at every turn. Meluskey homered again in the third, and the Aggies tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single from Brandon Clizbe.

Trailing late, NM State came through once more in the eighth. Jonatan Clough doubled home a run and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Aggies an 8-7 advantage entering the ninth. Moments later, Arizona State's Dean Toigo tied the game with a solo home run, sending the game into extra innings

After neither side broke through in the 10th, the Aggies delivered in the 11th. Clough was hit by a pitch, Clizbe singled and stole second, and Camden Kaufman came through with a clutch two‑run single to give NM State the lead for good.

Arizona State scratched across a run in the bottom of the 11th, but Carson Timmons closed the door to secure the victory. Dylan Weekly earned the win on the mound as the Aggie bullpen combined to navigate 11 innings against a ranked lineup.

With the win, NM State secured its second victory over a ranked program this season after previously knocking off No. 25 UTSA at home.

NOTABLES
  • With two home runs on the night, Tommy Meluskey became the third Aggie this season to tally multiple home runs in a single game, joining Jonatan Clough (vs. Southwest, March 10) and Easton Rulli (vs. TCU, March 17). He also doubled his season total in home runs after entering the night with two long balls this season.
  • Jonatan Clough delivered a standout performance, finishing with multiple hits including an RBI triple and an RBI double, scoring four runs. His triple in the first inning was his fourth of the year, matching the most in Conference USA this season. It also marks the most triples in a single season by an Aggie hitter since 2022 when Tommy Tabak had five.
  • Camden Kaufman delivered the deciding blow with a two‑RBI single in the 11th inning, recording his third multi-RBI game of the season.
  • Brandon Clizbe posted a multi‑hit night, drove in a run, and set up the game‑winner by stealing second base in the 11th.
  • Dylan Weekly picked up the win in relief, while Carson Timmons earned the save by stranding the tying run in the bottom of the 11th.
  • The victory marked NM State's fourth ranked win under Head Coach Jake Angier. This also marks just the second time in program history that the Aggies have tallied multiple ranked wins in back-to-back seasons, also doing so in 1996 and 1997 under the leadership of Elliott Avent.
  • For the second time this season, the Aggies earned a win in a game in which they trailed entering the sixth inning. With the win, NM State is now 2-20 when trailing heading into the seventh inning.
  • NM State also improved to 13-2 when scoring at least eight runs.
