TEXARKANA, Ark. – NM State men's golf wrapped up its season on Thursday at the Conference USA Championship at Texarkana Country Club. Following three rounds of stroke play the Aggies shot a combined 28-under to rank second and earn a spot in the match play portion of the championship. On Thursday, the Aggies fell 4-1 to Liberty in the match play semifinals, coming up just short of the program's first-ever CUSA title in its third year in the league. Liberty would go on to defeat UTEP 4-1 to claim the CUSA Championship.
Individually, NM State's
Javier Delgadillo shot an impressive 11-under to earn the crown, clearing the field of 52 individuals by two strokes. This marks the second consecutive year that the low individual has come from the Aggie program after
Aidan Thomas claimed the title just last year.
On the week, Delgadillo shot 71-66-68 to outplay a group of three individuals who tied for second at nine-under. In total, Delgadillo tallied a tournament-best 16 birdies, including posting eight birdies on his way to shooting six-under in the second round of the tournament. With a 66 in the second round, this marks the second-lowest score of his career.
This also serves as the second win of Delgadillo's four-year Aggie career and first since claiming the title at the 2023 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. As an Aggie, he has tallied eight top-10 finishes, including back-to-back top-10 placements at the CUSA Championship after finishing T9 in 2025.
Sophomore Mateo Payán also put forth an impressive performance as he shot a 67 (-5) in the opening round to hold a share of the lead. Payán closed out the week with a pair of rounds in which he shot 70 (-2) to finish the tournament at 9-under and in a tie for second alongside UTEP's Dylan Teeter and Alexandre Godin. In the opening round, Payán recorded eagles on both the 2
nd and 16
th holes to serve as one of only three players in the field to card multiple eagles on the week.
Max Chan bounced back from a 74 (+2) in the opening round to shoot a 70 (-2) in each of the final two rounds, leaving him in a tie for 19
th. This marks the best finish of Chan's young career. Senior
Ethan Klose concluded his Aggie career with a T25 finish after shooting 70-74-71 to conclude the week at 1-under.
Jackson Funkhouser rounded of the team with a T28 finish, as he posted scores of 71, 71 and 74 to finish at even par for the tournament. With this, the Aggies were one of only two teams in the 11-team field to finish the week with five players inside the top 30.
