Late Surge Comes Up Short at Arizona

NM State posts five-run ninth but can’t overcome deficit.

TUCSON, Ariz. – NM State nearly erased a late deficit Wednesday night at Hi Corbett Field, scoring five runs in the ninth inning before ultimately falling 8-6 to Arizona. With the loss, the Aggies fall to 19-28 on the year and will resume Conference USA play this Friday at Missouri State.

The Aggies were held scoreless through the first five innings before breaking through in the sixth. With the Aggies trailing 6-0, Jonatan Clough singled and later scored on an RBI base hit from Boston Vest to get NM State on the board. Arizona answered with runs in the seventh and eighth to build its lead.

NM State mounted a furious rally in the ninth. After loading the bases, Camden Kaufman drove in a run with an RBI single and Clough followed with an RBI groundout. Aidan Taclas doubled home two more runs, and Steve Solorzano added an RBI single to pull the Aggies within two, but Arizona was able to record the final outs to hold on.

Bradyn Barnes took the loss after four innings on the mound, while Kaufman led the offense with three hits as NM State finished with nine hits.
