LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A new "Voice of the Aggies" will be on the airwaves this year. In conjunction with Van Wagner, NM State Athletics has announced that MJ Newsom will take over as the director of broadcasting beginning this fall.

"He's an outstanding broadcaster with exceptional play-by-play talent and a creative approach to content creation. His energy and professionalism will help elevate our department, and he'll be a tremendous ambassador for the Aggies."

"Representing a premier Division I program has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I couldn't be more grateful to do so for a program that has rich athletic tradition and a passionate fanbase behind it. I cannot wait to share the stories of our incredible student athletes, our university and community, and bring Aggie Athletics to life."
 
As a 2025 graduate of the University of Southern California, Newsom has spent time working with USC Radio, while also serving as the primary play-by-play broadcaster for Pomona-Pitzer Athletics.
 
Following his senior year at USC, Newsom was named a First Team All-American by the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA), earning recognition as one of the top six collegiate broadcasters in the nation by industry professionals.
 
Newsom spent four athletic seasons in Claremont, Calif., where he founded the Sagehen Sports Network and broadcast Sagehen athletic events on FloSports and radio. With Pomona-Pitzer, he was promoted to the lead play-by-play voice upon graduation from USC.
 
During his time at USC, Newsom served as a pregame host and statistician for USC Radio, while also working as a play-by-play announcer and sports co-director for KXSC, the university's student radio station. He also broadcasted various USC athletic events, including baseball, volleyball and lacrosse on Pac-12 Network Plus and Big Ten Plus.
 
Newsom also called a handful of Alabama women's basketball and baseball games while filling in for his mentor, Roger Hoover. In addition, he served as a play-by-play broadcaster for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League, calling 40 home and road contests.
 
Newsom grew up in Vestavia Hills, Ala., where he got involved in Vestavia Hills High School's Sports Broadcasting Club as a sophomore before pursuing his dream at USC.
 
He will now serve as the primary play-by-play voice of Aggie Athletics, beginning this fall with ESPN+ broadcasts of NM State football and volleyball.
