Biography

Sophomore (2014): Derek Umphres had a productive sophomore season as an infielder for the Aggies. He led the team with a .328 batting average and appeared in 54 games with 52 starts. Umphres also finished second on the team with 40 RBI and a .453 slugging percentage while also leading the team with 66 hits.  His best game came against New Mexico (Apr. 2) going 2-for-5 and recording three RBI on the game against the Lobos. Umphres hit one home run and finished the game with a .324 batting average.In conference play, Umphres played and started 24 games for the Aggies recording 19 RBI, 16 runs and 26 hits with a .292 batting average. Umphres led the team with 91 total bases and finished second with 201 at bats.

Freshman (2013): Umphres played in 25 games, starting 19, as a true freshman for NM State in 2013.  He started 13 games at third base and another five at shortstop.  Umphres finished the season with a .246 batting average, a .449 slugging percentage, 17 hits including five doubles, 12 runs scored, 15 RBIs and three home runs, which placed him in a tie for sixth on the team.  Umphres had two hits in a game a total of six times throughout the season.  A couple of those times were during a four-game sweep of Alabama A&M.  During the second game (Mar. 16), his two hits were both doubles, leading to a two-RBI day.  Umphres topped that performance during the final game of the series (Mar. 17), again grabbing two hits, including a grand slam home run that led to a season-high five RBIs in an Aggie 30-3 blowout win.

High School: Umphres was a four-year starter for Safford High School playing under coach Robert Abalos.  Umphres helped his team reach the playoffs all four years he played and was named first team all-state at shortstop his junior and senior year.  He led the state of Arizona in batting average his senior year after hitting .673 that season.  Umphres marked a .493 batting average his junior season and added seven home runs on the year.

Personal:  Umphres was born in Safford, Ariz. and is the son of Mitchel and Tomi Umphres.  He is majoring in Civil Engineering.
