Biography

Sophomore (2007):  Smith showed what he had on the mound as he had the second most appearances for the Aggies with 23 and the second most innings pitched with 82.  He finished the season with the third best ERA at 7.02 and the third best opposing batting average at .329.  He was also second in win-loss percentage (.444), had the second most wins on the team (4), second in batters struck out (45) and tied for second in games started (9).  At UT-Arlington (3/3) in the Dallas-Baptist tournament, Smith hurled the ball for four innings and struck out three batters, although the Aggies fell 9-8.  He helped NMSU defeat the Lobos (3/13) 9-6 in Albuquerque.  That day he threw for 6 2/3 innings, struck out five batters and earned his first win.  In Smith’s first start of the season at San Jose State (3/23), he threw for 6 2/3 innings and got his second win of the year.  In game one of a double-header at Northern Colorado (4/15), he got the start and pitched for six innings to get his third win of the year.  Against San Jose State (5/11) at Presley Askew Field, Smith threw for a season-high seven innings and stuck out three batters, although the Aggies lost 8-5.  He got his fourth win of the year in his very next appearance when he threw for 2 2/3 innings against Texas Tech (5/15) as NMSU won 5-4.  In his final start of the year, Smith put in 5 2/3 innings of work and struck out a season high seven batters as the Aggies fell to Dallas Baptist (5/18) 6-5 in Farmington, N.M.

 

Red shirt Freshman (2006): Smith made 17 appearances on the mound for the Aggies coming up with two saves, and starting in seven games.  He struck out 32 batters making that fourth most on the team.  In his first start against New Mexico (2/7) he took the loss for the Aggies as he surrendered three runs on five hits in six innings, while striking out five batters.  Smith would again strike out five batters at New Mexico (2/21) in a 12-6 win getting credit as the winning pitcher for the first time in the season.  He picked up his second win of the season against Northern Colorado (2/26) as he threw for 6.1 innings striking out five batters and walking only one.  His third win of the season came at the #26 Texas Tech (4/4).  Smith pitched the final six innings of the game and was outstanding as he surrendered only two earned runs on four hits.

 

Freshman (2005): Smith red-shirted during his freshman year.

 

High School:   Dillon graduated from Eastwood High School in El Paso, Texas where he played baseball for the Troopers.  Smith was named first team all-El Paso and first team all-District 1-5A. 

 

Personal: Smith was born in El Paso, Texas and is the son of Danny Smith and Maria Weathers.  He is majoring in business.
