Junior (2014): Young hit .274 on the season while playing in 44 games and making 26 starts. All 26 of his starts came in centerfield with the Aggies going 12-14 when he made the start in center. When he started, Young batted in the No. 6 spot twice, the seven-hole 15 times and in the No. 8 spot nine times. Young finished the year with six doubles, one home run and 18 RBI while getting on base with 14 walks and going 4-of-5 on stolen base attempts. He did not commit a single error all season long. Young really stepped up in WAC games hitting .424 (14-of-33) during league play. He tallied five doubles and seven RBI to go along with a .576 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage during league play. Young hit .306 on the road, compared to hitting .245 at home. During the second game of the season against Saint Mary’s (Feb. 15), Young hit his only home run of the season, a two-run shot to help the Aggies win 14-2. Although NM State lost to Sacramento State 20-6 (March 30), Young did his part going 2-of-3 from the plate with a walk, a double, a stolen base and two RBI. During a 2-1 league win at Grand Canyon (April 26), Young came up big at the plate going 3-of-4 with a double while scoring both Aggie runs.
Prior to NM State: Young spent the 2013 season as an outfielder for Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix and spent the 2012 season as an outfielder at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz. He was part of a Yavapai team that won the conference championship.
High School: Young attended Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he graduated in 2011. As an outfielder on the baseball team, Young and the rest of the Sabercats won state championships during Young’s junior and senior years. He finished his career at SHS with a .395 batting average and 10 home runs en route to winning all-region and all-state honors. Young was also an all-city and all-region player on a Sabercat football team that won three state championships and won a state-record 37 consecutive games.
Personal: Young is the son of Barry and Terri Young. He is majoring in mechanical engineering.
