Biography

Junior: Aguirre started in 44 of the 49 games he played in for the Aggies in 2009. He held the third highest batting average on the team (.398), while he scored 42 runs for NM State.  He finished the year ranked seventh in the Western Athletic conference for slugging percentage (.645) and on-base percentage (.487). Aguirre's defensive game helped him earn the team's fourth spot in fielding percentage at .974 allowing only two errors all season. Aguirre had a season-high three homeruns against North Dakota (3/21) to contribute to the Aggies 16-2 victory. In the same game, Aguirre marked a team-high of 14 total bases and had six RBI and finished the game 4-of-6 with four runs scored. He led the team in triples (3) for the season, earning his first in game two of the doubleheader against UND. Against San Jose State (5/10), he scored two runs to help the Aggies defeat the regular season WAC champions.  In game two of a doubleheader at Louisiana Tech (5/14) Aguirre was 3-for-3 at the dish with a double, two walks, three runs scored, a home run and five RBI as the Aggies defeated the Bulldogs 16-0 in seven innings.

Sophomore (2008):  Aguirre played started in 12 games of the 42 he played as a sophomore.  He contributed to the team with a .288 batting average with 24 RBI and four home runs.  Aguirre finished the season with a .521 slugging percentage and did not make an error all season.  He had a season-high two hits against Panhandle State (4/16) and got his first bomb of the season against the same team the day before (4/15), which took the team total of homers to 55 at the time.  Not more than a week later, Aguirre hit a blast over the wall off the eventual National Champion Fresno State team (4/20).  He hit two homers in the month of May, both of which came off Hawai'i pitchers (5/10 & 22).  Aguirre came off the bench as a pinch hitter and a got to the plate as a designated hitter, but should see plenty of playing time in the outfield in 2009.

Freshman (2007):  Aguirre played in 52 games as a freshman and started in 44 of those games.  He made a name for himself as a freshman as he was third on the team in batting average (.324), fourth in slugging percentage (.412), fifth in hits (55), third in RBI (31), third in doubles (9), fifth in total bases (70) and tied for first in sacrifice flies (4).  Aguirre hit a home run in the third start of his career when the Aggies beat Utah (2/9) 16-5.  That day he went 3-of-4 with four RBI and scored twice.  At New Orleans (2/18) Aguirre helped NMSU take the series as he was 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBI.  In two games against Temple (2/24-25) Aguirre came up with four hits, which included the second bomb of his career, five RBI and scored four times.  He also played well at San Jose State when he went 2-of-3 with an RBI and scored twice in a 14-8 win in game one (3/23) of the series before he hit, a home run and went 2-for-3 in game two (3/24).  Aguirre played well in the series at Northern Colorado (4/14-16) as he had five hits, two RBI and scored three times. 

High School:  Aguirre played first baseman, pitcher and outfield for the Bulldogs from 2003-06.  He helped the Bulldogs to the area qualifiers in 2006 when team came up with a 19-21-1 record.  The team placed third in the district in 2006.  In 2005, Aguirre again helped the Bulldogs to the area qualifiers and a third-place showing in the district championships.  In 2004, he helped his team to the regional quarterfinals and a 2nd place finish in the district championships.  The team had a 12-2 win/loss record and had a 2nd place showing in the district championships.  Aguirre was named the James Bowie High School Offensive Player of the year and the 25-5A Newcomer of the Year in 2005.  In 2004, Aguirre was again named Offensive Player of the Year and he won the JBHS Gary Fowler award.  Aguirre was named to the 16-5A 1st team all-District as an outfielder and all-Central team as an outfielder.  In 2006, Aguirre was again named the JBHS Offensive Player of the Year and won the JBHS Gary Fowler Award.  He was named the JBHS MVP.  He earned a spot on the 16-5A all-District team as pitcher, all-Central Texas team at first base and TWSA all-State team at first base.  Aguirre's batting average was .421.  He hit 37 doubles, seven triples and 13 home runs.  Aguirre hit 119 RBIs and his slugging percentage was .717.  Aguirre's pitching record was 19-4. 

Personal:  Lionel G. Aguirre is the son of Lionel B. Aguirre and the late Lena Guerrero.  He was born in Austin, Texas and is majoring in communications.
