Junior: Ormseth returned to his native Las Cruces
in 2012 and proceeded to lead the Aggie starting pitching staff with eight
wins. Ormseth made 17 appearances
throughout the season, 13 of them as a starting pitcher, and finished with an
8-2 record. His .800 winning percentage
was also a team-best. Ormseth's eight
wins also ranked him in a tie for second among WAC pitchers. Ormseth pitched a total of 76.1 innings and
finished with a 5.33 earned run average (ERA) and 62 strikeouts on the
season. Not surprisingly, Ormseth had an
outstanding record in front of his hometown fans at Presley Askew Field. He finished with a 6-1 record in nine home
starts and had two-thirds of his strikeouts in Las Cruces.
Ormseth was added to the starting rotation during his rookie
campaign at NM State and did not disappoint, winning his first seven decisions
as an Aggie. During his second start of
the season, versus Sacred Heart (Feb. 24), Ormseth pitched five strong innings,
allowing only one run on four hits and accumulating six strikeouts en route to
his second win of the season. His
following start, at Minnesota (Mar. 1), Ormseth pitched a season-high eight
innings and for the second consecutive start had six strikeouts. He did not allow a single earned run and went
to 3-0 on the season with the win. Later
on in the month Ormseth exceeded his back-to-back six strikeout feat by
achieving back-to-back seven strikeout games, first against Southeast Missouri
State (Mar. 17) and then versus Texas-Pan American (Mar. 23). The seven strikeouts would be a season-high
for Ormseth. The Texas-Pan Am win
improved Ormseth's record to 6-0.
Ormseth would also win his next decision, against Louisiana Tech (Apr.
21), by allowing only four hits and no earned runs in five strong innings of
work. The 10-0 victory improved
Ormseth's record to 7-0. Yet, perhaps
one of Ormseth's best starts of the season came during his first loss. In Hawai'i (May 5), Ormseth pitched seven
strong innings, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out five
batters. For only one of a few times
during the season, however, the Aggie bats were silenced by the Rainbow Wahine
and NM State, along with Ormseth, went on to lose 0-1.
