Biography

Red-shirt Junior (2008):  Sturdevant made 13 appearances in 2008 and started in 11 games.    He acquired a 5.94 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings of work and earned 2008 2nd team all-WAC honors.  Sturdevant’s 50 K’s led the team, while 18 of those came with batters looking, which was also tops for the Aggies in 2008.  Heading into his senior season, Sturdevant has faced 603 batters in his career, giving up only 14 home runs.  In his first appearance in two years, Sturdevant worked four complete innings against New Orleans (2/22) picking up four strikeouts and giving up only one run as the Aggies won 12-11.  He got three strikeouts in one inning on the mound although the Aggies dropped the series finale 19-17 against UNO (2/24).  Sturdevant got his second win of the year and his first win in conference play when he worked six complete innings striking out three batters and giving up only one earned run, while five of the runs that were credited to him came unearned as the Aggie defense committed five errors on the night.  The Aggies beat San Jose State (3/20) 7-6 that day.  In his next outing, Sturdevant posted a season-high eight strikeouts versus Texas-Pan American (3/28) as he got the start for the Aggies and throwing strong for seven complete innings.  In his appearance, Sturdevant walked only two batters, gave up one earned run and only three hits.  The eight strikeouts in that outing was tied for a high on the team last season.  Sturdevant worked a season-high eight innings against Hawai’i (5/8) and helped the Aggies to a 7-5 victory.  He struggled in the first as he gave up the Rainbows’ five runs, but settled down and dominated them the rest of the game to pick up his fifth win of the year on 126 pitches thrown.  In the eight innings of work, Sturdevant struck out six of the 36 UH batters he faced and walked only two.

 

Junior (2007):  Sturdevant was a red shirt in 2007 due to an injury.

 

Sophomore (2006):  Sturdevant made five appearances on the mound, starting in four of those appearances.  In 28 innings pitched, he struck out 29 batters.  In his first appearance of the season Sturdevant pitched in relief entering the game in the fifth inning with two runners on base and managed to pitch out of a jam as he earned the win for the Aggies against Utah (2/4), striking out six batters in five innings.  He also gave up only four hits and didn’t allow a single run to cross the plate. Sturdevant pitched a complete game for NMSU while striking out six, but took the loss as the Aggies left 11 runners on base against Washington (2/11).  Against Gonzaga (2/19) he stuck out eight batters and walked only two in a 10-8 win.  Sturdevant compiled nine more strike outs in 10 innings of work before he got injured.

 

Freshman (2005): Sturdevant returns to the Aggies as the top returning reliever on the staff.  After hurling 25 innings, he finished his freshman campaign tied for first in saves (4), fifth in strikeouts (32), fourth in total appearances (17) and tied for first in games finished (11).  Tyler also finished tied for second in games pitched in relief (15), fifth in batters struck out looking (12) and first in home runs allowed as no batter went yard against him all season.  He surrendered two or fewer hits on 12 occasions, pitched 13 shutout innings and gave up only two triples and five doubles all season long.  In a four game stretch from Apr. 15 to Apr. 30, Sturdevant went to the mound and pitched a total of six perfect innings as he struck out 12 batters, gave up no runs and didn’t surrender a single hit or give a base on a walk.   In that four game stretch, he also recorded a season and career-high four strikeouts (4) on two occasions (Arkansas State, 4/23 & Kansas State, 4/27).

 

High School:   Tyler graduated from Chatfield Senior High in Littleton, Colorado, where he played baseball for the Chargers.  In his junior and senior year, Tyler was named team captain and first team all conference in baseball and football.  Tyler posted a .416 batting average, 26 RBI, six home runs and a .702 on base percentage as a senior.

 

Personal: Tyler was born in Littleton, Colorado, and is the son of Bill and Karen Sturdevant.  He is majoring in engineering.
