Andrew Mitchell, who made coaching stops at a pair of Power Five institutions following a stellar playing career, is in his third year with the Aggie program. Ahead of the 2024 campaign, Coach Mitchell was named the Assistant Head Coach and Run Game Coordinator after serving as the offensive line coach for the past two seasons – a responsibility he will continue to uphold.

In 2024, Mitchell helped coach an offensive line unit that was among the best in the country as the Aggies wrapped up the season with the 14th-ranked rushing attack in the country, averaging nearly 200 yards per game (198.7). The dominant Aggie front ultimately helped lead the program to its second 10-win season in NM State history while earning a spot in the Isleta New Mexico Bowl and an appearance in the Conference USA Championship game in year one as a member of the league. With the support of Mitchell’s unit, the Aggies eclipsed 200 rushing yards six times during the historic season, including an impressive effort in a win over Auburn in which the Aggies rushed for 213 yards and one touchdown against one of the nation’s top run defenses.

In Mitchell’s second year as the leader of the offensive line, two Aggies earned All-CUSA honors as left tackle Shiyazh Pete garnered first team recognition while center Canaan Yarro earned a spot on the All-CUSA Second Team.

During Mitchell’s first year with the program, the Aggies rushed for 161.6 yards per game while punching in 25 rushing touchdowns behind the offensive line. This was highlighted by a monstrous 357-yard, five-touchdown effort in a 45-26 home victory over Hawai’i. The front five also helped the Aggies finish the year with three-straight games of 200 rushing yards or more, including rushing for 240 yards in a win over Bowling Green in the Quick Lane Bowl.

The 2022 season also saw Canaan Yarro haul in College Football Network's All-Independent Second Team honors in his first year with the program.

Mitchell first matriculated to Las Cruces, N.M., following a run on staff at TCU alongside former Aggie head coach, Jerry Kill. There, in 2021, Mitchell's second stint in Fort Worth, Texas, was in the role of an offensive analyst for the Horned Frogs. Mitchell helped TCU claim a victory over a nationally-ranked foe (#12 Baylor on Nov. 6, 2021) en route to a 5-7 mark.

Mitchell’s stint with TCU came following a three-year run at one of the premier junior college programs in the nation. From February of 2017 until December of 2020, Mitchell held various positions at Snow College in Ephiram, Utah, most notably as the program's head coach in 2019 and 2020.

In addition to his role as head coach, Mitchell also sported the title of Associate AD for Advancement and helped spearhead private sector and state-level fundraising efforts which resulted in the creation of a $7 million football facility and an updated locker room.

During the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Mitchell was Snow College's offensive coordinator, offensive line and tight ends coach. With him calling plays, the Badgers' offense topped the junior college charts in scoring (50+ points per game) for each of those seasons.

Before returning to the site where he started his collegiate career, Mitchell was an offensive line coach at Indiana State (2016) and an assistant offensive line coach at TCU (January-June of 2016). His first stint at TCU featured Mitchell doubling as the Horned Frogs' tight ends coach.

Two institutions - North Carolina (2014-16 seasons) and Houston (2013 season) - had the benefit of Mitchell on their respective staffs as a graduate assistant for both the offensive line and tight ends. In each of Mitchell's seasons on staff at North Carolina, the Tar Heels ranked among the top 20 teams in the land in total offense and yards per play. While at Houston, Mitchell aided the Cougars in becoming one of the top 20 teams in the nation in terms of total offense, too.

A standout offensive lineman himself, Mitchell spent two seasons in an Oklahoma State uniform (2008-10). His time in Big 12 country came after a fine junior college career at Snow College. There, Mitchell secured NJCAA First Team All-American honors, JC Gridwire First Team All-American laurels, All-Region and All-Conference nods while helping Snow College make a trip to the 2006 NJCAA national title bout.

Upon the conclusion of his playing career, Mitchell spent time on either the offseason or practice squad of no fewer than three NFL clubs - the Cincinnati Bengals (2010-11), Seattle Seahawks (2012) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2012).

Mitchell secured his associate's degree in from Snow College in 2007 before obtaining a bachelor's degree in journalism & broadcasting from Oklahoma State in 2010.

Mitchell’s wife, Kaitlin, was a former soccer player at the University of Houston. The two have three children, Drew, Russell, and Jace.
