Powell begins his first season on staff at NM State after serving as a defensive assistant coach at Sacramento State where he primarily worked with the nickel safeties.

Prior to his stint with Sac State, he was the interim defensive coordinator at Independence Community College from 2023-24.

Ahead of his coaching career, Powell spent three seasons at Northern Arizona where appeared in 26 games, including playing 23 games across 2016 and 2017. His career was highlighted by an All-Big Sky Honorable Mention selection in 2017 following a season in which he ranked fourth on the team in total tackles with 61.

In 2016, he earned Big Sky Honorable Mention Special Teams distinction as he registered 30 tackles on the season.
