Tyler Wright enters his first season as the Aggies' offensive play caller after serving on NM State's staff as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach for the previous two seasons. In 2024, Wright will also take over duties as the Aggies' quarterbacks coach.

In Wright's second year at the helm of the special teams, the Aggies ranked 33rd in the nation in blocked kicks as Gabe Peterson's pair of blocked extra points made him the only FBS player in the country to log two blocked extra points during the 2023 season. The Aggies also ranked 72nd in the nation and third in CUSA in net punting - averaging 38.6 net yards per punt.

Wright also guided a tight end group which was exceptional in both the run game and pass game as the unit helped the Aggies finished 14th in the nation in rushing yards per game while hauling in five touchdown passes.

He was announced as the Special Teams Coordinator and Tight Ends coach for NM State on December 10, 2021, and in his first season, the Aggies saw tremendous success on special teams. NM State finished the year fifth nationally in punt return defense, allowing just 2.21 yards per return. Ranking 70th nationally in kick return defense, the Aggies also posted their highest ranking in the category in a decade.

The role with the Aggies sees Wright stepping into his first coaching role outside of the Lone Star State, Wright’s previous stop was in Fort Worth, Texas, where he was an offensive graduate assistant at TCU from 2019 through 2021. Through Wright’s three-year run on staff with the Horned Frogs, they amassed 16 victories - three of which came against opponents who were ranked 15th in then nation or higher.

During Wright’s time in Fort Worth, the Horned Frogs saw 10 players get selected in the NFL Draft, including three first round picks. On the offensive side of the ball, Wright worked with two selections including wide receiver Jalen Reagor, the Philadelphia Eagles first round selection in 2020.

While with the Horned Frogs, Wright and company saw two tight ends in Pro Wells and Artayvious Lynn head to the NFL as undrafted free agents. TCU was one of just three schools to send two tight ends to the next level after the 2020 season, joining Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Wright’s time at TCU came directly after a one-year stint as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at NCAA Division II institution UT Permian Basin in 2018. In addition to his on-field duties, Wright was a recruiter for the Falcons’ Lone Star Conference program. Wright oversaw the development of Taylor Null while at UT Permian Basin, helping the Falcons’ signal-caller establish single-season program record in passing yardage (2,145), touchdowns (16) and completions (176) as a true freshman.

His run in the city of Odessa, Texas, started in June of 2015 as the wide receivers coach and video coordinator at Odessa Permian High School. With Wright in their corner, the prep program compiled a 25-8 record thanks to a high-octane offense which averaged over 42 points per game. The Texas native was on the prep scene sidelines for three seasons, spanning from 2015-17.

Wright put together an impressive collegiate career at Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas. Suiting, up for the Texans for four seasons as a wide receiver, Wright helped the then-NCAA Division II squad claim a share of the Lone Star Conference championship in 2013. Through his final semester as a student at Tarleton, Wright served as a student intern for the Texans’ football team.

Wright boasts a pair of degrees - One from Texas Christian University and the other from Tarleton State University. While serving as a graduate assistant for the Horned Frogs, Wright completed the coursework for a Master’s of Liberal Arts degree. As a student-athlete for the Texans, Wright successfully finished the necessary workload for a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.

Wright is a native of Granbury, Texas and a graduate of Granbury High School. In high school, Wright was a distinguished receiver and was named to the All-State team as a senior.
