Biography

2012 (Junior): Smith played in 11 games for the Aggies at free safety, wide receiver and on special teams.  Smith recorded 10 tackles and 0.5 tackles for a loss.  Eight of his 10 tackles came in the season opener against Sacramento State (Aug. 30) where he also recorded his tackle for a loss. Smith was named Academic All-WAC for fall 2012.
2011 (Sophomore): Smith played safety and on kickoff coverage for the Aggies in 2011, seeing action in 12 games. On the season, Smith tallied 28 tackles, with 14 solo efforts. Smith saw he first real action of the season against Hawai’i (Oct. 22) as he recorded six tackles. He then repeated that feat against Georgia (Nov. 5). In his first career start, Smith collected a career-high 13 tackles and his first double-digit tackling effort, helping the Aggies defeat Fresno State (Nov. 12) for the first time in school history. Against Utah State in the season finale, Smith had three tackles.
2010 (Freshman): Smith played in 10 games for the Aggies on special teams and at the safety position. He tallied 18 tackles, nine solo efforts and a pass break-up on the year. Against No. 3 Boise State (Oct. 1), Smith recorded a career-high seven tackles. Versus Kansas (Sept. 25), he tallied six tackles and a pass break-up. At UTEP (Sept. 18), Smith grabbed three tackles.
High School: Smith was the Safford High School starting quarterback and defensive back from 2006-08. He was named a first team all-state selection at the defensive back position in 2008 and a second team all-state selection in 2007. He was also a first team all-region selection in 2007 and 2008 on both sides of the ball, as well as the offensive player of the year in 2008 at quarterback. In 2008, Smith threw for 1,312 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 1,186 yards and 17 touchdowns, helping his team to a 7-4 record. Defensively, Smith recorded 133 tackles, 77 solo efforts and three interceptions. As a junior he tallied 86 tackles and six interceptions. Smith also ran track helping his team to a state championship in 2007 and earned the state title in the 110-meter hurdles.
Personal: Smith is the son of Jeff and Janice Smith. He plans to major in criminal justice.
