2005: Matt should to be the Aggies’ starting free safety again this fall. Griebel was selected as a preseason second team All-WAC pick by CollegeFootballNews.com. During the spring, Matt broke his left arm in spring practice but is expected to be ready for the upcoming season. Last spring, Griebel posted a 4.0 GPA in Mechanical Engineering.
2004 (Junior): Griebel was named second team All-Sun Belt Conference and led the Aggie defensive backs in 2004, finishing second on the team in tackles with 91, playing in all 11 games with seven starts. He also recorded a career-high 15 tackles against Troy (9/17), registering three games with double-digit tackles. Griebel had 32 combined tackles in games against UTEP (10/2), Louisiana Lafayette (10/9) and North Texas (10/23). On the season, Griebel forced one fumble, while recovering three fumbles for nine yards. Against Florida International, Griebel scored his first career touchdown with a 64-yard interception return. For the year, he registered two interceptions for 96 yards. Versus North Texas, Griebel recorded a season-high seven solo tackles.
2003 (Sophomore): Griebel was outstanding during his first year as a starter, registering 67 tackles in eight games. He had a stretch of three consecutive games in which he had double figures in tackles. Griebel had 35 combined tackles in games against Oregon State (9/13), New Mexico (9/27) and Idaho (10/4). Against Idaho, Griebel had 11 total tackles and returned an interception 67 yards to the Idaho 32-yard line. In the season opener against #6 Texas, Griebel had six total tackles including a quarterback sack to stop a Longhorn first quarter drive. In the second game of the season, Griebel registered his first career interception against Western New Mexico (9/6). In the third game of the year, Griebel had a career-high 14 tackles, including two for loss against Oregon State (9/13). He missed three consecutive games (Middle Tennessee, UL Lafayette, UL Monroe) due to injury, registered six tackles against Arkansas State, but missed the next game against Utah State. He did return to play the final two games against Arkansas (6 tackles) and North Texas (5 tackles).
2002 (Redshirt Freshman): Matt recorded 29 tackles and recovered one fumble. He had at least one tackle in 11 games. He recorded a career high seven tackles and broke up a pass in the Aggies’ league victory over UL Monroe (10/19). He had five tackles and a fumble recovery against California (9/7) and had four tackles against nationally ranked Georgia (9/18) and Middle Tennessee (11/2).
2001 (Freshman): Griebel was a redshirt in his first year at New Mexico State.
High School: Matt was a second team all-Southern Arizona pick at linebacker his senior year at Canyon Del Oro High School in Tucson. He was named team MVP in 1999 and 2000. He was also named All-Region in 2000 and an All-Region Honorable Mention pick in 1999.
Personal: Matt is the son of Richard and Chris Griebel and is majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
