Biography

2012-13 (Senior)

As a senior, Watson averaged 10.3 points per game, which ranked third on the team, and 5.0 rebounds per contests. He played in 24 games with 23 games started. Watson recorded his second career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the 78-60 win over Louisiana Tech (March 7) to snap the Bulldogs’ 18-game winning streak, which was the nation’s longest. He posted a pair of 20-point games in 2012-13 including a career-high 26 points and career-high seven steals in the 83-82 win in double overtime at Seattle U (Jan. 10). Watson set career-high marks in rebounds with 11 boards in two games against Louisiana Tech and at New Mexico (Dec. 15). With 120 games played as an Aggie, Watson ranked ninth on NM State’s all-time list for games played.

2011-12 (Junior)

In his junior campaign, Watson continued to be a vital member of the Aggie lineup. He played in all 36 games and started in 35 contests. Watson averaged 7.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game in 2011-12. He also earned WAC All-Tournament Team honors after helping the Aggies to their second conference tournament title in three years. Watson dished 113 assists, which ranked second on the team and 10th in the WAC. He recorded 61 assists in conference action, which ranked fifth in the league. Watson grabbed 34 steals, which ranked third on the team and 15th in the WAC. His assist to turnover ratio was 1.45, which was 10th in the league, and in conference play he improved the ratio to 1.91, a mark that was sixth. Offensively, Watson shot 49.5 percent from the field (92-of-186). He increased his field goal percentage in WAC play to 53.7 percent (44-of-82), which ranked eighth. Watson recorded nine double-digit games. At Bakersfield (Jan. 2), Watson made a season-high nine free throws (9-of-10) including the game-winning free throws with 0.9 seconds remaining to give NM State a 73-72 win. He followed that performance with a season-high 14 points at Louisiana Tech (Jan. 7). Later that month, Watson sank two free throws with 14 seconds left in regulation to seal a four-point win, 60-56, over Fresno State (Jan. 28) in the annual Lou Henson Classic. Watson also had a career-high eight assists at Idaho (Feb. 9). He grabbed a season-high nine rebounds against Northern New Mexico (Feb. 14). Watson was instrumental in the Aggies making their 19th NCAA Tournament after he averaged 12.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in the WAC Tournament.  

2010-11 (Sophomore)

Watson made significant contributions as a sophomore, and he was one of only two Aggies to start in all 33 games in 2010-11. He almost tripled his points (7.6) and minutes (27.5) per game while more than doubled his rebounds (4.9) per contest from his first season in Las Cruces. Watson recorded 39 steals and 71 assists, which ranked second and third on the squad, respectively. In 12 games he had multiple steals, and he recorded seven contests with four assists or more. Watson dished a season-high seven assists in the home opener against Western New Mexico (Nov. 15). In the first rivalry game of the season with New Mexico (Dec. 4), he grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. Watson shot 56.3 percent from the field (90-of-160), 32.4 from the 3-point line (12-of-37) and 55.2 at the free-throw line (58-105). He improved his field goal percentage to 60.5 percent in WAC games, which ranked second in the conference. Watson scored in double-digits in nine games. He posted his first career double-double with a season-high 17 points and 10 rebounds against Boise State (Jan. 27). He tied his season high with 17 points against Louisiana Tech (Feb. 7). Watson ended the season with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting along with five rebounds against Boise State (March 11) in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament.

2009-10 (Freshman)

In his freshman season in the Crimson and White, Watson played in 27 games and started in four contests for the Aggies. He averaged 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game in 2009-10. Watson also contributed 14 assists and 13 steals along with a 55.8 field goal percentage. In his first career start, Watson scored six points, which included his first career 3-pointer, grabbed three rebounds along with a pair of assists and steals in 25 minutes of action at New Mexico (Dec. 5). In the following contest, Watson helped the Aggies to an 87-80 win over UTEP in El Paso (Dec. 13) for the first since December 2006. He scored the first seven points of the game for NM State and finished with nine points on a 4-for-4 shooting performance from the field. In the 78-72 win at Pepperdine (Dec. 18), Watson had seven points, a season-high eight rebounds, with two blocked shots and two steals in 27 minutes. He followed that showing with season-high 10 points in the 97-72 victory over Alcorn State (Dec. 21). In WAC play, Watson posted his best performance at Louisiana Tech (Jan. 30) with seven points and four rebounds in the 91-77 victory, when the Aggies handed the Bulldogs their first home loss of the season. In the 2010 WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev., (March 11-13), Watson didn’t miss a shot from the field with a 6-for-6 performance en route to the Aggies winning their second WAC Tournament Championship in program history. He concluded the season with two rebounds in NM State’s near upset of No. 12 Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

High School

Watson arrived in Las Cruces after playing on the Canadian Junior National Team in the summer of 2008. He guided his team to the bronze medal at the Nike Global Challenge and the squad also competed at the FIBA World Junior Championship Tournament.

At Hamilton Cathedral High School, Watson led the team to two consecutive Greater Hamilton Athletic Conference titles. As a senior, he directed Hamilton Cathedral to a 38-6 record with a team-high 15 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Watson was also a two-time first team league all-star.

Personal

He is the son of Nathalee Dunkley. Watson is pursuing a degree in geography.
