Brandon Mason completed his first season as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach at his alma mater.
Mason is the basketball staff's liaison to university development and athletic administrators. He coordinates 6th Man Club events such as the annual Marvin Menzies’ 6th Man Open, Tipoff Banquet held in the Pan American Center, and other special projects.
In his first season back in 2015-16, he aided NM State to a back-to-back WAC Championship as the Aggies collected a 23-11 ledger with a 13-1 WAC record. The Aggie advanced to the National Invitation Tournament for the first time since he played in the NIT in 2000.
Mason has spent the 2014-15 as an assistant coach at New Mexico Highlands after two seasons as the video administrator at New Mexico.
Mason played for the Aggies from 1999 to 2003, averaging 9.1 points and 3.2 rebounds for his career. He is part of the NM State 1,000-Point Club, scoring 1,051 points in his four seasons with the Aggies. He was also twice named the team’s defensive player of the year.
Mason still ranks in the Aggie career top 10 with 123 steals (eighth) and 302 assists (ninth).
Mason went on to play professionally in both the US and overseas, most recently in Lebanon for Byblos Sporting Club. He also helped the Albuquerque Thunderbirds win the 2006 NBDL (D-League) Championship and played for the Gallup Talons of the ABA.
Mason earned his degree in individualized studies in 2009 from NM State, with a minor in hotel, restaurant and tourism management.
