Javion May

Javion May embarks on a new chapter in his basketball journey as he transitions into his first year as a graduate assistant under the guidance of his former head coach, Jason Hooten. May played under Hooten at Sam Houston during his final three years there, being a defensive anchor and team leader for the Bearkats. After an impressive collegiate career marked by defensive tenacity and leadership, May is poised to bring his on-court experience and knowledge to the coaching staff.

May’s senior season in 2022-23 was a testament to his defensive prowess, as he started all 32 games, posting the highest defensive rating in the WAC at 84.4% and was named to the WAC All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive year. He finished his final season with an average of four points, five rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting an impressive 48% from the field. Some of May’s top performances that season, including a career-high 12 rebounds against Tarleton State and a season-high 13 points with four steals in a victory over Texas State.

In the 2021-22 season, May appeared in 30 games, starting in 29 of them. He averaged 5.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while being named to the WAC All-Defensive Team for the first time. One of the highlights of his season was a season-high 11-point performance against Texas, which earned him the No. 3 spot on ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the Day for a memorable dunk. His rebounding prowess was also on display with a career-high 11 boards against UTRGV.

May’s 2020-21 campaign saw him average 4.0 points per game and 2.2 assists while shooting 47% from the field. He made 24 starts and recorded several double-digit scoring performances, including a career-high 18 points against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

May’s collegiate career began at Colby Community College, where he played a pivotal role in the team’s historic 27-5 season, helping the Trojans capture their first conference title. His all-around play earned him an honorable mention selection on the All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference West team, as he averaged 11.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 55.1% from the field.
